I HEAR THERE'S A MEAT AND CHEESE SANDWICH I OUGHT TO TRY:  So, I have about 24 hours in the City of Brotherly Love next week (Wednesday late afternoon-Thursday late afternoon) before I head to a wedding down the Shore.  I'm staying in the historic district (right near the Constitution Center), and will have a car.  What do I need to eat, see, and do, folks?

You need to start by calling it Old City. No one will know what "the historic district" means.

  2. Eat Capogiro gelato. Preferably the chiocolato nero flavor. Also eat at Magnolia for brunch nom nom nom biscuits. Actually I only have food recommendations. Except The Mint. I really really really like visiting the Mint and watching the machines.

  3. Whoops I meant Morning Glory. Not Magnolia. Where did I get Magnolia from? Whatever.

Rosenbach is losing most of its Sendak stuff, per the terms of his will. :(

But not yet - go see it while you can! (Also, it's just down the street from Louis's/Billy Ray's house from Trading Places.)

For the most part, don't bother with the car, as Center City is highly walkable. Unless it'll be hot. Then all bets are off.

While it is Erev Rosh, I think I'll be able to organize a Quizzo outing for anyone who's interested. Details soon.

Even without the Sendak stuff, the Rosenbach collection is impressive. But, yes, like Adam C. says - go see the Sendak while you can.

I went to the Reading Terminal Market when I was in Philadelphia for a library conference. At the time there was what purported to be a "Southern food" diner kind of place. (This would not have been my choice of places to eat - never understand going to somewhere and eating the food that comes from where you live.) Anyway. I asked for Coke, they said they had Pepsi. I said, well then, have you got sweet tea? No sweet tea. I almost walked out. Don't call yourself "Southern" if you don't have Coca-Cola or sweet iced tea.

  10. I have the car because it made sense to have one for the trip down the shore (to Avalon), and I didn't want to have to shuffle bags between PHL, 30th Street, and wherever I was staying to rent a car in Center City. (I drive back from Avalon Sunday, flying out Sunday night.)
