RAZZMATAZZ: The Office and 30 Rock were depressing for different reasons tonight -- the former for that poignant David Wallace sequence, the latter because I wish Jan Hooks never had to age (though she's only 11 years older than Jane Krakowski) and because the show's simply seen better days. So I'm looking forward to what comes next with the Dunder-Mifflin/Sabre merger, but it's been a long time since Tina Fey's show has tasted a rainbow.

N.B. The referenced Diff'rent Strokes episode "Where There's Smoke" is online in its entirety.

  1. And Ed Helms finally gets elevated to a regular slot in the opening credits (though why is BJ Novak still in the credits?).  Haven't watched 30 Rock yet, but Community was firing on all cylinders tonight--I'm concerned that I might be coming a bit of a Jeff-Annie 'shipper, though I recognize it's so so wrong.

Hmm, I actually thought this 30 Rock was pretty good.  Community was great, though.

  3. Community was awesome.  P&R and the Office were also good.  30 Rock, ugh.

On a totally weird side note, I was in a restaurant in the West Village today and saw a guy walk in.  Looking at the guy, I recognized that he was an actor that appeared in a bunch of shows, but I couldn't put a name to the face.  Tonight, he was the head of the daycare on the Office!!  Weird.

Community was rockin the ensemble.  The Troy/Abed bromance has just become more and more cool/hilarious. ("I thought Troy was holding my hand but then I saw he thought I was Abed.")

Jim & Pam are their own show when they are out of the office- they go from being the "normal" ones to being the hapless/cluless social climbers.

Get your point on 30 Rock but there were still several jokes that made me laugh out loud and have to hit the jump back on the DVR.

  5. I will miss David Wallace if this is his end.  I hope Suck It is a huge success and he buys Dunder Mifflin from Sabre, but that seems somewhat unlikely.

  6. Two other plusses of the Office that haven't been mentioned:

    1.  The bizarre "welcome to Sabre!" video with Christian Slater.
    2.  Kathy Bates is going to fit in quite nicely here, I expect, and her obession with vid-conferencing will make it eaiser for her to appear.

The lengthy "Sab-ray" joke sequence didn't make any sense because who would have thought to pronounce it that way?  (OK, Michael might've, but someone (e.g., Jim) would have called him on it.)

Quite a comedown for Abed - he worked on the Yale Daily News under the Rory Gilmore regime.
