Occasions like this makes me want to see everyone more. We were not a hit, we were not anything. We were virtually invisible. As a result, it just came down to us enjoying each other, and we really did. It was like kids fooling around in the backyard.I was ridiculously fond of this show when it aired. Credits!
Bosom Buddies is a great example of a show with an utterly ridiculous premise that somehow managed to make it work by assembling an almost freakishly talented cast. And all credit to Hanks, who continues to be close with these folks despite having become King of Hollywood.
ReplyDeleteI loved this show, too, Adam! When Hanks made it big, I always had this secret pride that I knew him (from BB) before he was known.
ReplyDeleteI remember a story of Hanks hosting the Oscar nominee breakfast, the year he was up for his second award and was getting "Cary Grant of his generation" comparisons, and he apparently said "Folks, let's tone down the hype a bit." Pulls out his wallet, "Folks, this is my SAG card. I got this for doing Bosom Buddies."
ReplyDeleteOne of the commenters on the first story is right - I don't know anyone who didn't love this show. I think, though, that this is probably a case where many more people watched in syndication than ever watched initially.
ReplyDeleteI myself was pretty sure that Peter Scolari was the real talent on this show, and was kind of resentful at first at how Tom Hanks made it big.
Also guilty of loving this show.
ReplyDeleteYep. Watched it endlessly in syndication and loved it. I've always loved how Hanks has included Scolari in projects he's worked on.
ReplyDeleteThe first time my grad-student team won trivia night, the final question was "who were the female alter-egos of the main characters on Bosom Buddies?" The other students did not know. Kids today, no respect for the classics.
ReplyDeleteI watched this show when it was first run, and loved it, but have to admit that I had no idea Tom Hanks would become a huge star. Frankly, I thought Peter Scolari had better comic timing. Good thing I'm not a talent agent.
ReplyDeleteMy mom always used to say that BB was a show ahead of its time.
ReplyDeleteI watched and enjoyed in syndication as well. I always thought of it as the guy from Splash with Michael from Newhart. Just to show which I preferred.
ReplyDeleteWatched it in the initial run, watched it in syndication, watched it again a few years ago when they were running it at 3am on some radnom station - I've always loved Bosom Buddies (and hell, anything with a Billy Joel theme song would have gottem me in those days).
ReplyDeleteStacie, I completely agree - I always feel a little like my favorite H!ITG made it really big. Huge.
Scolari is underappreciated - he was wonderful (and completely different) on Newhart, and I even enjoyed him in the TV version of Honey I Shrunk the Kids.
There is, by the way, a part of me that giggles every time I remember that Dan Aykroyd and Donna Dixon have been married for more than 25 years. "Sonny, Sonny, Sonny, Sonny, Sonny...."
I forgot that Family Ties' Uncle Ned was on Bosom Buddies.
ReplyDeleteFirst run and always lover of this show!
