Carrey's attempts to stretch in dramatic roles haven't connected with moviegoers, from the Capra-corny 'The Majestic' to the horrific 'The Number 23.' Becoming Tom Hanks or Jack Lemmon didn't work for Carrey, who just isn't beloved in the same way."
So what should he do? Claims one producer with whom Thompson spoke, "All Carrey has to do is step back into a role where he does that funny thing and he's back. He doesn't have to do leading men. Audiences would welcome him." Or are you finished with him?

ReplyDeleteHe and Jenny broke up, so maybe he has/will come to his senses. He was magnificent in Turman Show and Eternal Sunshine, so he can do dramatic with a comedic flair but needs to pick better vehicles and work with better directors (just as Robin Williams can actually act in the right vehicle).
ReplyDeleteI absolutely loved his last big comedy, Yes Man, and I think that it's probably a good lane for him to stay in. He excels in movies with a broad, high concept set-up where he can do his "Jim Carrey: Human Cartoon Character" thing, but still be reined in by the construction of the story.

ReplyDeleteI also have trouble separating Jim Carrey: Actor from Jim Carrey: Actor Who Uses His Position to Advance Dubious Health Beliefs. I'm pretty much over him.
