The farm kid in me appreciates the sentiment of acknowledging that your steak or bacon or whatever used to be an animal because I find it a little weird when people won't or don't like to acknowledge that and i think we could all support better farming and husbandry practices. But whoa eccentric billionaire eccentricities there Batman!
...and I meant to add (sorry for the double post) that I respect this practice and the related philosophical position among those of limited means for whom the adoption of an "eat only what you kill" rule means a commitment to modification of diet, animal husbandry, conscientious hunting / cleaning / curing of game, etc.
Considering the adoption of the same rule by Zuckerberg, a person of nigh-unlimited means, however, I find myself worried that maybe it's just an excuse to kill things.
Man. Of all the issues in the world his money could really do some good (clean water-LIKE, Human trafficking-DISLIKE), this is where he makes his ethical stand? REALLY?
Are we sure he's not still in college?
(disclaimer: I have no idea if he's actually donated chunks of money to anything other than schools.)
So you're an eccentric billionaire with a farmer friend who will let you kill animals.... big deal. Where I'm from we called that "Saturday".
I'd be more interested in HOW he chooses what form of 'personal growth' to devote an entire year to. I'm guessing facebook poll, but what else was on the list that "only eat things I kill" topped?
I'm with Phil. I'm not sure what one learns about "sustainable farming and raising of animals" by purchasing an animal someone else has raised so you can kill it. It reminds me of people who go hunting in private, fenced-in preserves and seems a lot more about the killing than the understanding where your food comes from thing. (This is one reason why there are slaughterhouses, and yes, even small-scale farms use them.)
Also, memo to CNN, adjectives and verbs are different things: "loathe" means "to dislike intensely", but "Loath" means "reluctant". Zuckerberg's friends may loathe eating with him but they are LOATH to eat at his home. /vocabulary police

ReplyDeleteHeather K, agreed.
ReplyDeleteIf he decides to go cannibal, though, I know a set of twins who oughta watch out.
If I had to guess, I would have said of course Zuckerberg kills animals and then eats their hearts.
ReplyDeleteRelatedly, Zuck has taken a minority interest in Omaha Steaks(tm).

...and(2) now I'm tripling up because what better pretext for linking one of my favorite Big Black recordings?

It's possible I've had too much coffee.
This came up at lunch and I thought we were talking about Michael Pollan. Zuckerburg? Seriously? Just be a vegetarian, you weirdo.
ReplyDeleteI did not realize there was information about Mark Zuckerberg I could care about less than everything else I know about him.
