AND, REALLY, HOW BAD CAN IT BE WHEN THE GUY WHO PLAYED MIKE DEXTER IN CAN'T HARDLY WAIT IS A VAMPIRE DOCTOR AND ELDER STATESMAN? Say what you will about the
Twilight films -- and let's be honest, we basically only invoke the sparklevamps here to complain about EW's excessive coverage thereof -- but as NYMag's Kyle Buchanan points out,
at least unlike other blockbusters it thoroughly passes the Bechdel Test.
Woudn't Twilight be required to have some actual women characters to pass the Bechdel Test? All I see are Mary Sues and Bella enablers.
ReplyDeleteI like a number of the performers in Twilight--Kendrick, Reaser, and Lefevre have all done good work in other venues, and Stewart worked well in Adventureland (her laconic distance would have made her an interesting take on Lisbeth Salander as well), but it still doesn't interest me.
ReplyDeleteAlso, as I understand, Avengers has two female characters in the ensemble--Black Widow and Maria Hill, though we haven't seen much of her in promotional material. (Thor, I believe, passes Bechdel test because Dennings and Portman gab about astrophysics for a while.)
Was sadly watching Alvin and the Chipmunks: the Squeakuel for the 100th time with the kids and it ocurred to me that it passes Bechdel. (Chipettes talk about music and being stars).
ReplyDeleteI want to hit the "like" button for Adam's headline. Best.
ReplyDelete...but if you compare it to the book, the LOTR movies worked out way better for women, considering the biggest female character in the movies 1) doesn't appear in the book propper (hello appendicies) and 2) gets all kinds of heroic action that belonged to male characters in the book. But yeah, not many ladies in Middle Earth (though they all come out fairly three dimensional).
ReplyDeleteAmusingly, when I looked at this post I was wondering whether The Muppets does (I can think of one possibly qualifying conversastion, but for purposes of avoiding spoilers, I will just say it ends iwth a karate chop.)
ReplyDeleteI don't think passing the Bechdel Test makes up for the incredibly unhealthy relationship at the center of the story.
