Caleb Hanie had a...rough day, and a really doltish way to end the game with a grounding call, and then Mike Marz compounded the problem by calling pass after pass as if he was still coaching the 1999 Rams. All in all, a frustrating loss when the Bears could have certainly won.
Norv Turner has cemented his reputation as the worst coach in the NFL. Three straight runs in OT because you're satisfied with a 52-yard field goal attempt to win the game? Why not dial up a play or two that actually tries to gain some yardage and make life a little easier for your kicker?
Tottenham Hotspur took three valuable points on the road at West Brom, and have a good shot to vault into second with their game in hand, as United dropped points at home to the Magpies.
The miracle of Tebow is not the miracle of Tebow. It is the miracle that John Fox has found a way to win games with a QB who has never completed 50% of his passes in an NFL game and who has not thrown for more than 10 completions in November and who yesterday ran 22 times for a 3.0 average. I read on Football Outsiders the other day that the average NFL pass play (including incompletions and sacks) is something like 6 or 7 yards. That makes pass plays more valuable than run plays. Yet Denver is running an offense that uses fewer pass plays and gets fewer yards per pass play than the NFL average. John Fox, not Tim Tebow, deserves all of the credit for figuring out how to win while running an offense with severe limitations.
The key is the Denver defense. Shortening the field for the offense and keeping the games close enough so that wins are possible late. The offense that Denver and Tebow are running will have trouble overcoming a 2 TD deficit.
Adam, can we talk about the Philly game if we talk about it in the context of New England's defense? Because a defense that gives up as many yards as that one does is only going to give away so few points for so long. With NE's schedule, I can see them going 13-3 and then having another stupid January loss.
I'd tend to agree with you, but it's worth noting that the Broncos had Tebow at quarterback when they beat the Dolphins in overtime after trailing 15-0 with 5 1/2 minutes left in regulation.

ReplyDeleteNice kicking on both sides though.

ReplyDeleteClassic Norv. Playing for a long field goal from a kicker who had already missed one of that length earlier in the game.

ReplyDeleteLoved that Newcastle tie, Benner!
ReplyDeleteA 52-yard field goal attempt from the guy you signed to replace your injured first-string kicker.

ReplyDeleteI'm still having trouble coming to grips with the idea that a big call went against MFU. How does that happen?
