SO IS THIS MAH-VAH-LEOUS OR NOT? Billy Crystal has tweeted that he'll be hosting the Oscars. No confirmation from the Academy or outside news sources yet, but that would be the least surprising and safest news imaginable.
He's a known quantity and to be fair, there's not much you can say against Crystal. He's sort of like the older, slightly bawdy uncle you see every holiday; he's basically a good person and you can trust the kids with him.
He is not funny He will beat a joke until it doesn't even sound like a joke any more His style of humor seemed dated even when it was popular Which was 20 years ago Every single voice of his is annoying He is not funny
Well, if true, I'll say I called it yesterday. (If not true, I'll just slink away quietly and forget I said anything.)
Not the most exciting option, no, but a safe, known quantity. Think they can get away with it once on nostalgia. I wouldn't make a habit of it. But, they will need to put Jack in the front row or he won't have enough material.
This is my thinking as well. These are not people who have their finger on the pulse of anything, y'know, current. i'm guessing they feel their Ratner/Murphy experiment died before it got the chance to live, so why not go back to safe.
Just wanted to point out that the peak of Eddie Murphy's popularity (1982-1988) preceded the peak of Billy Crystal's popularity (1989-1991), so just in terms of finger-on-the-pulseness, Murphy to Crystal was a move foward in time, if also a move backward in funny.
Billy Crystal is where "edge" goes to die. Which may make him perfect for what the Academy wants, though not what I want.
ReplyDeleteDammit. I wanted the Muppets to host. Perhaps with Neil Patrick Harris.

ReplyDeleteThe Oscars haven't been funny in years, so why start now?

ReplyDeleteI'll be the fogey. I like Crystal and think his sensibility, style, and chops are ideally suited for this, and I'm happy he will get to do it again.

ReplyDeleteMy 81 year-old mother is happy about the choice. If the Capitol Steps warm up for him, she'll be thrilled.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if Mark Russell is free. (I wonder if he's dead.)
ReplyDeleteGood. I was worried they would select a host that would make me want to watch.
