BECAUSE SKATING WITH CELEBRITIES WAS ALREADY DONE: Because of several "13 and out" shows (Private Practice, 666 Park Avenue, Last Resort), as well as the need to fill between cycles of Dancing With People You Might Be Vaguely Familiar With, ABC has a bunch of midseason stuff.  Of particular note:
  • Despite the floppage of Last Resort ratings-wise, ABC is sticking the similarly-themed Anthony Edwards-led conspiracy thriller Zero Hour into the Thursday leadoff spot, where it will assuredly be massacred by the mixture of Idol and Big Bang Theory.
  • Between-Dancing-cycle fillers on Tuesday include what looks like a Top Chef-type competition (with hosts Anthony Bourdain and Nigella Lawson) and Celebrity Diving, which is exactly what it sounds like.
  • Suburgatory, which has had a dynamite second season, loses the plum post-Modern Family slot in April to a Sarah Chalke sitcom.
Good news is that it looks like Happy Endings isn't being touched--I'd been afraid that its low ratings, it might get yanked early.

  3. I will be watching the Nigella show, and drinking every time she says "succulent," "decadent," "sinful" or "naughty."

  4. Earlier competition shows taught Americans to sit through six minutes of fluff and filler to get a payoff in the form of a two-minute performance. Celebrity Diving will train them to sit through almost eight minutes of fluff and filler in exchange for a two-second dive.

    Progress!

I seriously cannot fathom how Celebrity Diving is going to work. Diving be hard, ya'll. I used to practice three hours a day when I was in high school and it would have taken a big leap for me to be a collegiate diver. Unless the celebrities try tricky stuff, it is going to be boring. Of course, I will still watch...

A friend of mine has become close with Greg and his partner and says a) Greg is an awesome human being - kind, smart, etc and b) he will get us tickets to be in the audience for an episode. I humbly request the right to guest blog the experience if/when it happens. Please?

    However: "isn't being touched"

I think the takeaway is that TV execs think Americans want to see celebrity painful flops. Which they probably do for something longer than the length of one 30-second commercial but shorter than the length of an entire show, and then the whole thing will get cancelled.

  12. "A love of good home cuisine" and "Respect for a mother of three" are the things I feel when I see her, Amy.

....and a need to adjust my seating position, but I'm sure that's just my back reacting to all the carbs I can't have.

I do realize that some of her shtick is just that: shtick. (Licking fingers, eyef***ing the camera, etc.) But she's just such a luscious, sensual woman in general.

According to this, Happy Endings actually is being displaces, by the Dancing with the Stars results show. Here's hoping it lands somewhere; I love that bunch of idiots, and also Jane and Brad.

Is there any situation where this blog wouldn't accept a guest post by a regular in the audience for a TV taping?

I started watching Happy Endings a few months ago and am now almost caught up (just watched the Season 3 premiere last night). I think Isaac was the one who suggested I watch this, and I'm very grateful - I adore it. Much like P&R, it took them a little while to get the characters and the balance right, but now it's a hell of a show. Given that I love Eliza Coupe, I'm not sure why I wasn't watching this from the beginning.

And for all that those early days weren't perfect, I can rewatch the episode where Penny speaks Italian when she's drunk (and only when she's drunk) over and over again.
