MONEY AIN'T GOT NO OWNERS, ONLY SPENDERS:  As our Wire Wednesday Withdrawal continues (still haven't figured out a Breaking Bad catch-up plan), you should feel free to share with us those quotes and concepts from The Wire which have now entered into your normal discourse.

  4. This one is very useful. Sometimes I like to throw the "We're building something here, detective. We're building it from scratch" to the front of it.

Does asking for "Body of an American" to be played at my funeral count?

    "Indeed."
"Ain't no nostalgia to this shit here."

I do have to admit to finding that the show has engendered in me a certain amount of cynicism when I hear of plans and programs to solve problems. I feel like the show has taught me that no bureaucratic organization can fix anything - I work for a large, global organization, and when I hear plans for change and improvement I always think of the show and how impossible change is within a system like this.

On another note, did anyone finish -30- and want to immediately start watching the whole thing again? I did (want to - I haven't actually), and it was my second time through.

I just told my husband that I need to work "Ain't no thing" into all of my conversations. And I tend to yell "5-0, 5-0" when I want attention. We just started Season 4 last night. When we are done, I will go back and read everyone's Wire Wednesday discussions.

I can understand the impulse. I'll probably give it time to rest before revisiting, though. Like how I seem to find myself watching S1 of Friday Night Lights every year.

    Get on with it, motherf

(that's not censored; it's just the way it's said before the interruption)

  11. I find "What kind of scotch are you using?" to be a good query whenever I get stumped trying to advise a friend who has gotten stumped in the middle of a project. It lightens the mood, and reminds them who they called for "advice".

"I'm feeling really, really white over here..." has also popped into my mind in a couple of situations, though not yet in any situation where it had a snowball's chance of popping out of my mouth.

And for one of the top-level quotes, let's just say that, with respect to a particular pro bono matter, I have now spent the better part of 3 years wondering if maybe it wasn't my turn to give a shit.

There are many others, but those spring to mind.

  15. "I think the reason you're so stressed about work is that you are real police."
    "What do you mean?"
"You give a fuck when it ain't your turn to give a fuck!"

  16. "The job will not save you." (Frequently said to myself)

some variation on "...when it ain't your turn."

And just this week I used "re-up" to refer to a prescription. That's not obsession, is it?

A little off topic, but it fits under Wire Withdrawal: I taped The Corner the other day and plan on watching it all this weekend. Since it's only a couple hours start to finish, are people interested in doing it as a follow up?
