ANIMAL BEAT DRUMS: By request, we're having a very special ALOTT5MA Friday Playlist. Show us your best songs about animals--either generally or about any specific animal you can think of (cocktail party-appropriate music is particularly invited). I'll start us off with two:
Bonus points for animals named in our cocktail menu: Hawk, Bulldog, Dalmatian, Panther, Monkey, Spider, Iguana, Flamingo, Squirrel, Bear, Horse, Ram, Rattlesnake, Dog, Lizard.
ReplyDeleteBlack Dog, Dread Zeppelin
ReplyDelete"Gorilla, You're a Desperado," by Zevon. Just for the lyrics alone. "Big gorilla at the L.A. Zoo / Snatched the glasses right off my face / Stole the keys to my BMW / Left me here to take his place."
ReplyDeleteAtomic Dog - George Clinton
ReplyDeleteThey aren't all ABOUT animals, but...
ReplyDeletePretty Flamingo, Manfred Mann
Part Man, Part Monkey, Bruce Springsteen
Wild Horses, Stones
Chicken Lips and Lizard Hips, Bruce Springsteen
Fever Dog, Stillwater (Almost Famous Soundtrack)
Does Ziggy Stardust count for Spider?
Aimee Mann, Labrador
ReplyDeleteI'm a Gnu -- Flanders & Swann
ReplyDelete"A Manatee Sneezed on Me" by John Flynn. It's a kids song, but pretty fun.

Close to Rattlesnake--The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonight, R.E.M.
ReplyDeleteOr you could put the first lines of Springsteen's Promised Land on a loop:
ReplyDeleteOn a rattlesnake speedway in the Utah desert/
I pick up my money and head back into town.
Everyone Walk The Dinosaur.
ReplyDeleteRattlesnakes is a Llloyd Cole & The Commotions song from 1984. I have the Tori Amos version from her Strange Little Girls album
ReplyDeletePink Flamingos -- Rickie Lee Jones from Traffic in Paradise
ReplyDeleteBulldog -- Tracy Bonham from The Burdens of Being Upright
ReplyDeleteHawk -- not exactly, but I have Hawkmom 269 by U2, E=MC Hawking by MC Hawking, and Mohawk by Charlie Parker.
ReplyDeleteDalmatian -- I recommend the Replacements' cover of Cruella de Ville. Or, you could go in this direction,
ReplyDeleteKlapa - Traditional Dalmatian Song
The Panther -- Thunderball from Den of Thieves (ESL)
ReplyDeleteThe Squirrel, Fats Navarro and Tadd Dameron
ReplyDeletesomething newer for horse -- Faster Horses, MNDR
ram -- best I can do is Rama Lama Ding Dong by the Edsels
Iguana -- Manana Iguana, Bobby McFerrin
spider -- the absolutely insane version of There Was an Old Lday by the Wallets. Jim Clifford destroys the bass. Amazing.
ReplyDeleteLizard -- I do not recommend the 23 minute King Crimson Lizard. Unless you have a house full of prog fanatics, it's 3am, and they're baked out of their minds.
ReplyDeletePunt and go with something by the band Flying Lizards.
Eagle and the Hawk, John Denver
ReplyDeleteJust for fun: Gilda Radner's "Let's Talk Dirty to the Animals."

Bird Calls (or Gunslinging Bird), Charles Mingus
Teddy Bear, Elvis Presley

Not cocktail party appropriate, unless you hate your guests, but I am rather fond of Pink Floyd's "Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving with a Pict" (It's not the song I enjoy quite as much as the title.)
ReplyDeleteWhoa! This blog looks exactly like my old one! It's on a entirely different subject but it has pretty much the same layout and design. Excellent choice of colors!

I always love that that song was written by Shel Silverstein.
ReplyDeleteEl Orangutan by The Iguanas
