I HEAR HIT LIST HAS AN AMAZING A CAPELLA NUMBER IN THE SHOW:The Tony Awards, hosted for the third consecutive year by ALOTT5MA Fave NPH, return to Radio City tonight after two years in exile on the Upper West Side.  Debate how Kinky Boots, Matilda, and Pippin will split the spoils (my guess--Kinky gets score, making Cyndi Lauper just an Oscar short of EGOT, and actor for Billy Porter, Matilda gets book and Best Musical, while Pippin runs the table, getting Featured Actor, Featured Actress, Actress, Director, and Revival, plus a bunch of tech stuff), and whether Tom Hanks' starpower and the warm reception of Lucky Guy are enough to beat back the rapturous reviews (but limited box office success and long-ago closing) of Virginia Woolf.  Talk amongst yourselves here--show starts at 8.

What comes first in monologue: Smash joke, or "Bette didn't get nominated" joke?

  2. There'll be more Smash jokes given that Will Chase is nominated and Megan Hilty is presenting/singing.

If only the Goonies theme song had gotten the respect it deserved...

  5. Fun show. Highlights for me were all the NPH moments, including the whole "You've Gotta Have a Series" segment; Patina Miller winning (I haven't seen her in anything, she just seemed so happy and moved!), Christopher Durang winning a Tony, Tracy Letts winning Best Actor (is he the first to win a Best Actor and Best Play Tony?!) and the Kinky Boots sort-of upset for Best Musical. (Which I also haven't seen, but I was tired of hearing Matilda was a sure thing. I didn't love it.)

  6. Although I'm a New Yorker now, I was thrilled to see Chicago so well represented. My heart and pride will forever stay there.

  7. Harvey Fierstein--Best Actor and Best Play for Torch Song Trilogy, as well as Best Book for La Cage and Best Actor in a Musical for Hairspray. (And uncredited, but allegedly substantial, punchup work on the winning book for Hairspray.)

Tracy Letts has a Pulitzer too, and I'm guessing he's the only one with that trifecta. But good for Harvey Fierstein, I hadn't realized all the writing awards he'd won.

It hurt my heart a little when Sally Field royally butchered the name of Santino Fontana in lead actor musical! Poor guy. First nomination and they eff up his name.

    Full disclosure: childhood friend.

I was hoping the show would help me decide what to see when I come to NYC with my family in July, but I'm still lost and confused. I love Bway shows and have seen lots. On this trip I'm bringing my 9-year-old son for his first NYC visit, and my hubby, who appreciates good entertainment but could not be called a huge musical fan. I was thinking of Matilda, but the number last night didn't do much for me (and definitely didn't for my hubby). Kinky Boots looks fun, but it is ok for a kid? Pippin looks amazing, but I've heard it might be too dark for younger viewers. Any suggestions would be hugely appreciated.

  12. My understanding is that this production of Pippin in particular is very high on the sexual stuff, so maybe not for a 9 year-old. Kinky Boots is apparently fairly clean, though drag is a BIG part of the show. My favorite content advisory? Once--"Contains profanity, including the 'f' word, but is otherwise an extremely wholesome show."

If your son hasn't seen Newsies, my nephew (also 9) loved it. He also loved Blue Man Group.

My kids (10 and 6) thought Matilda was awesome, as did I. However, if you didn't like Revolting Children (and I'm curious as to why you didn't), maybe you wouldn't like the rest of the show.
Second the Newsies recommendation -- great show for kids, and very entertaining for adults. Incredible dancing, and better singing than I was expecting.
Mama Mia is really fun for a 9-y.o., if you can get past the plot (girl looking for father, who is one of 3 possible candidates who mom slept with at relevant time).
I would not take 9-y.o. to see Kinky Boots, Book of Mormon, or Avenue Q.

Thanks guys - Newsies is a great idea. I'm not familiar with Matilda, and I think I was expecting something lighter in tone - my kid doesn't go for anything too dark, so it didn't look like something he would go for. I'll give Kinky Boots some thought (it would probably require a conversation beforehand, but living in Portland we see all kinds of interesting stuff - I'm not sure how my kid would respond). I'm excited to be sharing the trip with my family, but ... man ... I wish I could sneak away for some grown-up shows. I still haven't seen Mormons, and would love to see Pippin as well.

Matilda is pretty dark for a kid who doesn't do dark. I mean, it's about parents who hate their kid...

Newsies probably safest bet. Also I didn't think Matilda was all that great.

Matt, how could you spell a cappella incorrectly? How COULD you? After all this time following me on Twitter have you learned NOTHING?!

Peter and the Starcatcher would be another possibility. It has moved off bway, but is still running. It has dark moments, for sure, but there is a lot of silly. It is a play with music vs. a musical.

I think we should start campaigning to get NPH his hosting EGOT: http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/movies/moviesnow/la-et-mn-tony-awards-host-neil-patrick-harris-oscars-20130609,0,6079576.story They gotta let him host the Grammys, right? That wouldn't be at all weird.
