PERHAPS THE ONLY THING ON WHICH GREGG EASTERBROOK REMAINS CORRECT:  Seasonal creep sucks. My SuperFresh is already selling Halloween candy, and Starbucks started rolling out its pumpkin flavorings this morning.  Only, what, two weeks until the red cups and peppermint mocha frappuccinos?

Costco has had Christmas stuff for sale since, I think, early this month. Yikes.

Costco has a bit of an excuse since they sell to local business.

Pumpkin and autumn beers have been in stores since the beginning of August: http://brewyorknewyork.com/post/56980285041/seasonal-creep-continues-to-rear-its-ugly-pumpkiny

  4. The Magic Kingdom at Disney World already has Mickey pumpkins lining Main Street. Of course, the first Halloween party there is Sept. 10.

  5. Why is pumpkin the only fruit stuck in its actual harvest season? I eat berries, oranges and cherries year round, but I can't get a pumpkin-flavored soup or muffin unless it's fall. Come late January, I'm out of luck. I think the pumpkin lobby should work on this.

  6. Yeah, Disney goes Summer-->Halloween-->Christmas without much pause.

  7. The Duane Reade near me put up Halloween costumes a couple of weeks ago. The big thing in NYC will be all the Halloween popup stores opening (seemingly every vacant storefront in NYC becomes a costume store for 2.5 months).

The pumpkin lobby and the cranberry lobby should get together.

I always have to stock up on cranberries and stick them in a freezer in November so I can use them year-round. Have you ever tried to find cranberries in May? Can't be done. At least you can get canned pumpkin there. Can't find a cranberry in May that isn't dried or jellied if your life depends on it.

IT ISN"T EVEN ROSH HASHANA YET. To every thing there is a season, people. August is not the season for Halloween.

Our junior high did not release a school supply list this year, suggesting that each teacher would have his or her own requirements, so the students should wait until next week to buy their supplies. By the time we make it to Target, we may only be able to buy Halloween-themed pencils.

Considering that canned pumpkin is available year-round, and is probably what most pumpkin soup and muffins are made from, I agree. We make a very easy pumpkin-chickpea soup, all pantry and freezer ingredients, year-round except in hottest part of summer.
On the other hand, as a late-fall birthday person, I get annoyed that the only non-chocolate flavors available tend to be pumpkin and carrot, which I don't love in desserts. Savory pumpkin or pumpkin bread/muffin, great, but not a fan of it in pie or other desserts. I'd like to see some tropical dessert flavors in the fall, like pineapple, coconut, banana, since those are usually available year-round.

Would you share the recipe for your easy pumpkin-chickpea soup? I am intrigued.
