ReplyDeleteI usually mean that they're pursuing their own gratification in a way that recklessly discounts the comfort or well-being of others. It's similar to saying someone is being a hard-on, but with particular emphasis on a reckless sort of decadence rather than simple dogged myopia. For whatever it's worth, the author's diagnosis is compatible with this usage.
