JOHN TYLER'S HEIRS APPLAUD POLITELY: Via a recent AskReddit which wondered "What's the one fun fact that you most often tell people?", I now know that there is an existing photograph in which both Abraham Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt appear.
(Last time we surveyed your favorite amazing facts: January 2012.)
Common Core FTW.
ReplyDeleteMost of my "fun facts" are related to the Law School and thus not of particular interest to most of the rest of the world.
ReplyDeleteThe short answer is because of some gerrymandering tactics by the publisher. There's a lawsuit pending on this: http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/thr-esq/warner-music-aims-keep-happy-619757
ReplyDeleteBefore his political career, James Garfield taught college courses. He was ambidextrous and to amuse his students would write on the chalkboard with both hands at the same time--one in Latin and the other in Greek.
ReplyDeleteLikewise, Pink Floyd's The Wall was released in 1979, a point in time equidistant between now and the end of World War II.
ReplyDeleteFairly well known, but I do like it: President John Tyler, who was born in 1798 and served from 1841-45 has two still-living grandchildren, each born in the 1920s.
ReplyDeleteAnother fun fact: the most common surname in America never to have been shared by a Major League Baseball Player? Nguyen.
Garfield also came up with a novel proof of the Pythagorean Theorem

Shakespeare infamously willed his wife his second best bed, which most people take as an insult and proof that he didn't like her very much. In fact, the second best bed would have been the one that they shared; the best bed was traditionally reserved for company.
ReplyDeleteHer name? Anne Hathaway.
ReplyDeleteMine is both personal and global and also AWFUL.
ReplyDeleteI grew up in Eastern Washington state in an area called the Tri--Cities that would probably not be the size it is today if it hadn't been for the Manhattan Project and the Hanford Nuclear Reservation which is where the Plutonium for the bomb that was dropped on Nagasaki was made. The nearest town to Hanford is Richland, Washington where the high school mascot is the Bombers--ostensibly after the WWII bomber Day's Pay which was named for the day's worth of pay that everyone at Hanford gave up to help pay for that same bomber. However, the logo thingy that goes on everyone's letterman's jacket and spirit tshirts for this school sure is not a plane. It's the letter R with a mushroom cloud over it because that is not problematic at all.

As portrayed in the muscial version by Neil Patrick Harris.
ReplyDeleteHe also started out as a janitor to pay his way through school. Garfield was a super interesting guy, I would recommend "Destiny of the Republic."
ReplyDeleteOne of my best friends spent his Freshman year as a Hanford Bomber. He was very proud of that.
ReplyDeleteOne fact -- not a fun fact -- that is something that comes on occasion is I knew the girl later portrayed by Tori Spelling in "Death of a Cheerleader"
