THE ONLY TRUE CURRENCY IN THIS BANKRUPT WORLD IS WHAT WE SHARE WITH SOMEONE ELSE WHEN WE'RE UNCOOL: The WSJ is reporting that Philip Seymour Hoffman was found dead in his NYC apartment this afternoon, and other reports suggest that it may have been the product of his ongoing addiction issues. I didn't like every movie he made, but he invariably delivered interesting performances, be it in an indie or a blockbuster, as a flawed hero or a strangely sympathetic villain.

Tragic. Although it certainly settles who gets the most applause during the Oscar necrology.

Ugh. Not to prejudge the outcome of the investigation, but drug addiction sucks. Such a great actor, even in the small roles. The 12 y.o.'s first reaction was what happens to Plutarch; looks like Mockingjay Part 1 is already in the can, but Mockingjay Part 2 is still shooting. And he just had a show picked up by Showtime. Not sure how any of that gets handled.

  3. Mockingjay Part 1 probably isn't completely done yet, since Patina Miller (who has a small, but significant, part) hasn't shot yet.

O'Toole, Fontaine, Gandolfini. But this is a sad and way too predictable tragedy. PSH was fearless and awesome, and this is horribly sad.

And Max Schell (and Rankin of Rankin/Bass) already this week

  7. So, so sad. His wife is a noted costume designer, and he of course has done lots of stage work and co-founded LABryinth Theater, so the theater community is mourning.

I remember seeing him in "True West" with John C. Reilly several years ago. They were switching off roles every other night, and you didn't know which pairing you were going to get. I somehow pictured Hoffman as Lee (the angry, antagonistic drifter) and Reilly as Austin (the mild-mannered writer, at least at the start of the play). They were playing the opposite roles that night - and they were both brilliant.

    What a loss.

Reports still a bit cloudy on this, but it seems like PSH was "substantially" done with his scenes in Part 1 (maybe still had to loop?), but he still had about a week's worth of filming left on Part 2. And it's not clear to me how much of the 10-episode season of "Happyish" was done filming beyond the pilot -- IMDb lists it as in post-production, but if that's even accurate, I'm thinking in TV production that doesn't mean quite the same thing as in film.

I read about Schell first yesterday, and I was about to tweet an RIP along with my favorite line of his from THE FRESHMAN: "Carmine said one boy, here are two!" The breaking news banner for PSH came over my phone just at that moment.
