SCENES A SCARE: A self-published author has sued the makers of
Cabin in The Woods, claiming that they stole it from him. This is a particularly fascinating case because
Cabin is a send-up of (and tribute to) certain horror cliches, and a bunch of the purported similarities seem to be such cliches--e.g., the lack of cell phone reception, that the heroes "drink alcohol and play games," and that characters are killed.
This reminds me of the lawsuit against Raiders of the Lost Ark. The claim was that it was stolen from another work about an archeologist searching for the Ark. IIRC, the judge ruled that most of the similarities in the suit would be in any Ark-based adventure (the Middle East! a love interest! digging! caves!), and it missed the big things, like Nazis.
ReplyDeleteIf the book had a merman attack I'll believe it. If not gtfo.
ReplyDeleteWe are never gonna see a merman. Ever. Dude, be thankful. Those things are terrifying. And the cleanup on them is a nightmare.
