- SyFy original Eureka is running as a comedy, not a drama. Hellcats and Shameless are running dramas, not comedies.
- Bizarre entries for lead actor in a comedy--Doug Savant (Desperate Housewives), Rob Lowe (Parks & Rec). Interestingly, Christian Slater dropped down to supporting actor for Breaking In.
- For Game of Thrones, Sean Bean and Lena Headey are running as leads, Mark Addy, Peter Dinklage, Aidan Gillen, Kit Harrington, Jason Momoa, Emila Clarke, and Michelle Fairley as supporting.
- Sherlock is eligible as a mini-series/movie--Benedict Cumberbatch submitted Study In Pink. (Primarily British produced shows are typically ineligible, so Doctor Who is not in the mix.)
- Rather than the traditional "everyone goes supporting" route, the cast of Mad Love, with the exception of Judy Greer, submitted as leads.
- Oddball submissions--Max Adler (Karofsky from Glee) as supporting actor, Heather Morris as supporting actress. Given that, Darren Criss' submission as guest actor is really strange. (The unquestioned winner for weirdness, though--"Dane Cook, Outstanding Guest Actor, Drama.")
- Interesting missing folks? No submission from Alex O'Loughlin for Five-0, though his co-stars submitted, no submission from Blake Lively for Gossip Girl.
- Hosts of SNL who submitted as guest actors? Dana Carvey, Jim Carrey, Zach Galifianakis, Timberlake, Miley Cyrus, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler.

THE BEST OF TV WHO FILLED OUT THE PAPERWORK: Emmy nominating ballots are out, and there's some interesting choices:
Jimmy Smits did not submit for Outlaw? Damn.
ReplyDeleteHis ghost father advised him against it.
ReplyDeleteInteresting to me that Cumberbatch submitted for Study in Pink rather than The Great Game.

ReplyDeleteHm.</span>
He decided he could do more good as a presenter.
ReplyDeleteI'm not clear how Heather Morris as supporting qualifies as an oddball submission. I probably couldn't justify putting her on my ballot, but I'd like to.
ReplyDeleteBTW, I thought "The Great Game" was pretty easily the best episode of television I saw this year. (Granted, I don't watch many of the current critical darlings, and I'm only catching up on Breaking Bad.) (Also, I know you disagree, Ted.)
ReplyDeleteI actually thought Study in Pink was better. But the Great Game was very very good. Blind Banker, not as much.
ReplyDeleteI'd agree with Jordan. I just don't think I liked the casting of Moriarty, and Study in Pink had that sort of "Oh, this is new and exciting!" energy to it.
ReplyDeleteThey're all available on Netflix instant now, by the way, so everyone should check them out that hasn't already.
FWIW, "Ice-T" is alphabetized with Ice, not with "T."
ReplyDeleteIt's very odd who from Glee submitted--Agron, Lynch, Mays, Morris, Rivera submitted as supporting, while Ashley Fink (Lauren Zises) and Dot-Marie Jones (Bieste) submitted as guests, but Ushkowitz and Riley did not submit at all, despite being regulars and certainly in more episodes than Mays and Lynch were.
Wow, I thought the Moriarty casting was brilliant, and that whole scene at the end was completely mesmerizing. Different strokes. But I of course agree that Study in Pink was also terrific, that Blind Banker was not as good, and that everyone should watch all three of them.
ReplyDeleteI think what made me like TGG more was the way it delved into the idea (raised by Holmes in Pink, when he calls himself a high-functioning sociopath) that Holmes and Moriarty are so very, very similar.
ReplyDeleteDinklage obviously has the lead out of the men in that group, but Emilia Clarke vs. Michelle Fairley is interesting.
ReplyDeleteI also liked the casting of Moriarty for the same reasons as Russ, but Study in Pink has so many great scenes, especially Holmes and Watson's "date" and the scenes at the end. Cumberbatch got off a lot of great lines in those two.
ReplyDeleteClarke has the problem that to get the full impact of the performance, you really have to watch the full series and get Dany's progression from meek girl to badass Kahlessi. Dinklage, it's very easy to take one episode (most likely, the one where he's "confessing") and get the performance.
ReplyDeleteI saw yesterday that BET has its first series submitted for a major award - "The Game," which has done very well on BET after moving from The CW, submitted in best comedy series.
ReplyDeleteUshkowitz and Harry Shum said in an interview somewhere that they weren't going to bother because it costs money and they knew they had no shot.
ReplyDeleteI am so rooting for Mayim Bialik! I love Amy Farrah Fowler. She gets funnier and funnier with every episode.
ReplyDeleteI find the survival of The Game oddly fascinating, since it's one of the shows from the CW's premiere season that was not a holdover from the merger and the only one still airing (still left, by the way: Supernatural, One Tree Hill and America's Next Top Model; Smallville was also part of that group).
ReplyDeleteMaybe I need to rewatch it, but doesn't Moriarty say he's leaving then suddenly just come back? I didn't really get that either, other than to make the cliffhanger ending. It's all good - and as you said, different strokes - but I just really loved Study in Pink.
ReplyDeleteAnd get way better swag.
ReplyDeleteThe extended hiatus helped. Also, the CW has had a dramatic shift in priority. When UPN started, key to its survival and key demo was African-Americans---that stayed even up to the merger. (The WB also used to aim at more "whole family" programming--Gilmore Girls, Everwood, etc.) For various reasons, CW wants to focus like a laser on women ages 12-24, and their programming generally shows it--the staple African-American sitcoms didn't fit.
ReplyDeleteThey haven't given any decent story lines to Ushkowitz and Riley this year, so there weren't any Emmy-worthy episodes to submit. (insert Isaac and others' rant re Glee story lines in general.)
ReplyDeleteI may actually watch the Emmy's this year just for Peter Dinklage - he's an angry elf! Hot damn,he has been such a joy to watch, I hope he wins. Besides, with this series, you never know who is going to be killed off, so this might his only chance for a nomination!
ReplyDeleteI can't believe anyone from the cast of Mad Love submitted themselves for consideration. Huh? Really? #ShakesHead
This is now a total threadjack (and go us!), but I think M's point was that he was being unpredictable. (I was going to say more but don't want to ruin the episode for people, so I will leave it there.)
