MY QUESTION, SHOULD YOU CHOOSE TO ACCEPT IT:  So I'd really like to see the apparently super-awesome new action movie directed by Brad Bird, but I have no interest in seeing Tom Cruise in a fourquel.  So the Clooney films and Hugo top the list of what I'd like to see this weekend, but what's on yours?

I saw MI: Ghost Protocol, Tom Cruise was pretty understated actually and the movie was Amazing on the IMAX screen. I went to a free screening, but think it would have been worth the 13 bucks to see it. The sequence in Dubai alone is worth seeing in the IMAX theater.

My friends an I are on an Oscar movie quest....we're seeing Marcy, May, Martha...or whatever it's called and Young Adult this weekend.

Saw the trailer for MI:GP when I saw Young Adult and it was sufficiently exciting. But if I were to go to the movies this week (which I will probably not), I'd probably go for Muppets or Descendents or The Artist.

  3. I have a bunch of movie plans for the coming two weeks, so I think I may go see Hugo tomorrow, as it's the movie other adults are least likely to want to see.

The Descendants was pretty good. Hugo is lovely. And is actually worth catching in 3D, if 3D doesn't make you sick.

  5. Tonight was Young Adult, which is an interesting move forward for Diablo Cody in terms of subject matter and style, and makes me quite interested to see what she will do with Sweet Valley High.  (I did want more closure/ending for Oswalt's character, who's perhaps even more interesting than Mavis.)

Already have tickets for a showing of M:I:IV tomorrow afternoon in real film Imax up at Lincoln Square, which means I'll get the Dark Knight Rises prologue as a bonus.

Sunday's fare will depend on a number of things--if a film, likeliest option is Holmes 2, though legit theatre is also a possibility.

I'm having trouble getting enthused about The Artist and Hugo--I'm not the biggest fan of "love letters to the golden age of cinema!"--though I'll likely wind up seeing both since I try to see most of the big Oscar contenders.  Tinker, Tailor is also on the list, but if I'm going to see a spy movie, I'm probably, let's be honest, going to opt for one with explosions.

We're having a seasonal beer tasting tomorrow (Hey Russ, what are you and the daughter doing?), so no movies until Sunday. The kids dictate what we see if we go this weekend, so it'll be "Arthur Christmas" or "Hugo". I'm debating catching "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" in DC at the restored Lincoln Theatre this week. Other than that, I'll start my Oscar-watching push the day after Christmas with "The Artist" and "War Horse".

I saw Descendants last week and was underwhelmed. This weekend is not for movies, but my department's "off-site project review" next week will be at MIGP, and I'm sure I'll see Sherlock Holmes sometime next weekend. I fear I'll have to see Tinker, Tailor, etc. on my own time.

  8. Just got back from Sherlock Holmes. Fiancé and I very much enjoyed it.

  9. I was not a huge fan of The Descendants - I found it rather boring, though pretty (but it's shot in Hawaii, it would have to try very hard not to be pretty). I'm going to see Hugo in 3D this weekend. Young Adult and Ghost Protocol are both on my to-see-soon list, though.

  10. We're going swimming at Lifetime, but otherwise free.  When are you tasting?  Feel free to email me.  I think you have it, but russ hanser at yahoo dot com, with no punctuation in my name.  She'd love to meet some new kids, I'm sure!  :)

Young Adult this weekend.  Saw Hugo and the Muppets last weekend.  Hugo's definitely worth seeing, even if I wasn't totally thrilled with the story.  Was there actually a point to finding out what had happened to his uncle?

Muppets was great, as has been discussed.  Is there a reason why Rizzo wasn't in it, or did I just miss him?

  12. I agree with Matt's assessment of Young Adult and would add that Patton Oswalt's performance was fearless and pitch perfect.

I was surprised at how full the theater was for Young Adult (it only opened here this week) and by how many of the viewers were 40+.

  13. If you're in the mood to stream movies, check out Slate's Ten movie you didn't see in 2011, but should have. I'd watched the amazing Viva Riva! before reading the list and can now also recommend A Lonely Place to Die and Little Big Soldier. For an idea of how well Jackie Chan's Little Big Soldier works, I first watched it on youtube with Dutch subtitles.

  14. Ghost Protocol is really good, especially the big three setpieces--a prison break set to "Ain't That A Kick In The Head," the "climbing the Burj Khalifa" sequence that's been the center of the marketing, and the climax, a chase through a parking structure for a briefcase which owes more than a little to Pixar sequences like the Monsters Inc. door one and the Toy Story 2 airport conveyer belt chase.  That said, the plot is kind of impenetrable, and an epilogue to tie up loose ends and provide retroexposition does the opposite.

The Dark Knight Rises prologue is impeccible technically (and drew applause at its start and end), but I don't know if I understood a single word Tom Hardy said during the sequence, which could be a very real problem.

  15. I saw the Americanized Dragon Tattoo Friday night, and am eager to hear what y'all think. I'm hoping to catch MI4 soon. I do enjoy a movie where things blow up.
