THIS WAS A GREAT MAN, A MAN OF VISION AND GUTS. AND THERE ISN'T EVEN A PLAQUE, OR A SIGNPOST OR A STATUE OF HIM IN THAT TOWN: The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced that in November, it will present Francis Ford Coppola with the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award and give honorary Oscars to British film historian and preservationist Kevin Brownlow, French new wave director Jean-Luc Godard and veteran actor Eli Wallach.

But crap, they're still shuffling them off to the Governor's Ball.  Seriously, they could maybe justify that for Roger Corman.  But these four?  Re-fing-diculous.

  2. I didn't like it last year, but I thought they did a decent job during the awards ceremony of giving a shoutout to the honorary winners.  (Still, Coppola?  If you tell folks that the whole Godfather cast would be reunited on stage at the Oscars, folks would want to see it.)

  3. Eli Wallach was the cool elderly guy in The Holiday. Not the greatest movie, but I liked his storyline and his chemistry with Kate Winslet was really sweet. Great to see he will be recognized for all of his work.

But would you get Brando on that stage, really?  (Or is he dead?  I am so not sure. . .oh premorse)

Ok, so that was not premorse, he actually is dead.  Thanks google.  Now wondering how I missed that in 2004?

Well, for better or worse, this is the business we have chosen...

Hell, now the more I think about it the more I want Eli Wallach on that stage.  One of the better choices (not that it's a huge highlight of his career) of Keeping the Faith was having the senior clerics played by Eli Wallach and Milo Forman, a nice nod (and Forman does have a lovely Prague Spring monologue as well).
