HYPOTHETICALLY, OF COURSE:  Assuming you're also monitoring the account for unauthorized charges, about how long do you take to go from "oh, crap, after a busy day out-and-about I can't find [x] credit card" to requesting a new card?

  1. I would request a new card right after calling the last place I used it to see if I left it there.

I would monitor it carefully and wait a day or two to see if I could find it. (This happened recently and I did find it under one of my car mats.) If there's no bad charges on it, chances are good you actually still have it somewhere. If one shows up, then you can cancel it.

You wait until about an hour before you find the lost card.

  4. Given the ease with which cards are cloned these days -- swipe into a reader, upload to your friend with a printer, head out on the town -- I'd replace any card that had been out of my possession in a retail or hospitality environment for more than a minute. If it's under your floor mat, that's one thing. If you have to go back and pick it up somewhere just report it lost and have them fedex a new one.

I was able to call my bank and ask them to put a temporary freeze/hold on it. I found it the next day. In my purse. It wasn't there before. I swear.

I would not look for it and not worry about it one bit for at least three-to-five business days or until Amazon makes delivery to Isaac Spaceman of a long-bed jointer, whichever comes first. After that, it's up to you.

  7. And the revelation! Isaac Spaceman is actually Nick Offerman!

2-3 days for me, which is usually enough time to find it. The one time I actually had left it somewhere, my credit-card company called to say a newsstand at an airport had called to say I left it there, before I even noticed it was gone.
