I FEEL LIKE IT WANTS TO BE MACARONI AND CHEESE, AND IT WANTS TO BE CAKE. IT JUST DOESN'T KNOW WHICH ONE IT IS YET:  Some gentile Buzzfeed staffers try traditional Jewish foods for the first time.

If they gave them gefilte fish from a jar, the whole thing is invalid. That's like expecting someone to like pizza by giving them three-day-old Dominos.

I agree, and yet, as a suburban New Jersey Jew, I was a man fully grown before I tasted non-jarred or canned gefilte fish. I don't think there was anyone distributing frozen loaves outside of perhaps Brooklyn and Teaneck until the '90s, so if you wanted anything better than jarred, grey fish covered in jelly you had to make your own, and even most folk's grandmothers had stopped doing that.

I don't think you have to be a goy to believe chopped liver or gefilte fish are just plain unappealing. And I'm more a salty kugel person than a sweet kugel person. But my favorite reaction was the one to matzoh ball soup: "Who thinks: Hey, I'd like a big bowl of broth with a giant sponge in the middle?'"

If chopped liver isn't amazingly delicious, you're doing it wrong.

Lucky thing my grandmother still did.

If your food is shipped in "frozen loaves," that might be an issue.

I'm a sweet kugel goy myself, though my wife is completely disgusted by the idea.

  9. Whole Foods in NYC makes excellent fresh gefilte fish for the Jewish holidays.
