UP WHERE HE BELONGS:  R.I.P. Joe Cocker, whose soulful voice remains unforgettable.

  1. When the judges on "American Idol" (at least during the Cowell seasons) talk about "artistry," Joe Cocker is what they're thinking of. The man is known chiefly for renditions of other people's songs, but his approach was unique and his band was so very very amazing. That crazy background choir, the frenetic energy he had behind a mic -- the amount of game he was to get up with John Belushi's impression of him -- what a great performer, and what a sad loss.
