I'M STILL BIG RED: You wouldn't expect geek news repository Ain't It Cool News to give loving coverage to the tenth anniversary of
Bring It On, but they've had fascinating interviews with both
writer Jessica Bendinger and
director Peyton Reed this week, including how the Sparky scene came into being, who was hung over during the bikini car wash scene, which now-hot director worked as a choreographer for the film, and the two actresses who nearly played Torrance Shipman. As for its brilliance, the
opening scene does more than enough to justify it.
I got my then-husband to go see this movie in the theater on opening weekend by saying four words: "Cheerleader bikini car wash."
ReplyDeleteAlso, fantastic director's commentary on the DVD. One of my favorites.
This is awesome. I absolutely love retrospectives on past movies and tv shows - one of my favorite EW features is when they take a somewhat older movie and do an oral history on it. I never would have thought "Bring it On" (one of those I-have-to-stop-on-it-when-it's-on-cable movies for me) would get that treatment. The difference in perspectives from the writer and director are interesting, too - she seems to think the ending never changed from her original script, while the director thinks the ending was up in the air for a long time.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the heads up, Watts - I'll havet o check out the DVD commentary.
Make sure to listen to the director's commentary on the deleted scenes. Peyton Reed made some very smart decisions editing that film, in terms of pacing.
ReplyDeleteLove this movie, with one caveat: the "oh, by the way, they were guaranteed a spot at Nationals no matter what happened at regionals" explanation which should have come sooner or been replaced by something ... else.
ReplyDeleteAnd furthering my theory that every actor of a certain age went through the Buffy casting office, we have three Buffy alums here: Nicole Bildeback (who was a Cordette), Eliza Dushku and Clare Kramer.
ReplyDeleteI really wish Lindsay Sloane had worked more for the last ten years. I'm afraid she's now too old for the roles for which she was perfect.
ReplyDelete
Sloane had a nice guest turn on How I Met Your Mother last year, but she should've worked more. Loved her on Grosse Pointe.

Bizarrely enough, I saw the actor that played Sparky in the Bay Area a few weekends ago in the musical I was watching. I kept thinking, "that guy looks familiar..."
