GLAMOUR GETS YOU A NOMINATION: As usual, the Golden Globe nominations are a mixture of the obvious--The Fighter, Black Swan, and Social Network racking up big nods on the movie side, Glee, Mad Men, and Temple Grandin on the TV side--and the surprising, some pleasant (Walking Dead for Best TV Drama, Elisabeth Moss for lead (not supporting!) actress in a TV Drama, Emma Stone for Best Actress (Comedy)), and others completely inexplicable (Burlesque and Red for Best Picture (Comedy/Musical), The Tourist with 3 major nods, Piper Perabo for Best Actress (TV Drama), Jennifer Love Hewitt for Best Actress (TV Movie), Scott Caan for Best Supporting Actor (TV)). Doesn't look like it changes the picture that much from an Oscar perspective--no surprises on the drama side, though Blue Valentine may have picked up a little heat from this--and the bizarre comedy/musical nominations aren't likely to give us any change (Kids Are All Right has cinched a nod for Best Picture, and the others are non-factors).

FFS, Burlesque should win its category on principle, as it's the only nominee that is even close to being a musical or comedy. (I think—did Alice have songs? Like characters-singing-songs songs?)

JLoHew got a nomination for the Client List!!! GAH!! AHAHAHAH!

I know I am not the only fan of the GoFug girls here, and they did a wonderful piece on this that can be found here: http://gofugyourself.com/fug_the_fromage_the_client_list_080310-08-2010

Let's keep in mind this nomination is for a Lifetime original movie where she plays someone who is down on her luck due to the recession and gets a job as a "Massage Therapist"

    I LOVE THIS.

  3. Scott Caan's the biggest reason I watch Hawaii Five-O. And considering that he has to go out of his way and then some to make up for the giant personality suck that is Alex O'Loughlin as the "lead" of that show, his nomination as a "supporting" actor is an apt description.

I am interested that both Bening and Moore got nominated as leads for Kids. I was listening to a podcast recently that wondered if Moore would get put forth as lead and Bening as supporting, come Oscar time, except for the fact that Bening is such a big name. Having seen the movie, I could put Bening as either lead or supporting.

Also, my favorite song out of Tangled was Mother Knows Best. Shame to see it not get a nod. That "Light" song was so OTT corny and romantic that there were snickers in the theater during that scene.

I had to stop reading when I saw a Best Pic nom for Burlesque.

  6. I saw Burlesque over the weekend, and on its own terms, it's actually pretty successful--yes, the script needed considerable polish (Bell and Tucci both needed much more bitchy dialogue, and several characters appear and disappear for no apparent reason--Alan Cumming, Dianna Agron, and Julianne Hough's in particular) and probably used "MONTAGE" more times than any other word, and neither of the two romantic leads can actually act--but the production numbers are glossy and shiny, and even if she can't act, Aguilera sure as hell can sing and look fabulous doing so.

  7. There must have been a severe shortage of comedy/musical contenders this year. I don't know if The Kids Are All Right is such a sure bet for an Oscar nomination. Dave Karger of EW indicated yesterday it's on the bubble at the moment.

  8. They couldn't find room in Best Supporting Actor - TV for Terry O'Quinn or anyone else from Lost? Because I love The Good Wife, but Chris Noth is not why.

Do we think the makers of the Tourist knew that before the nominations came out?

  10. Small, traditional, actress-driven film with generally excellent reviews? It fits a slot, especially when you consider that other slots are likely to be filled by Inception, Social Network, Black Swan, and King's Speech. With 5, it might have a hard time, but with 10? No problem.

  11. Oh is it that time of year again? When malls are crowded, Salvation Army Santas put up their buckets and the taste of 95 junket whores who publish in obscure outlets four times a year becomes mysteriously worthy of extensive discussion?

  12. Well, that's a crazy category. Look at who's in it: an actor from a tv movie (Strathairn), an actor from a sitcom (Stonestreet), an actor from a one-hour musical/comedy/drama (Colfer), an actor from a one-hour action/comedy/drama (Caan), and Noth, who is the only actor from a straight, one-hour drama on the list.

But I agree, I would have put several other actors (O'Quinn or Halloway from Lost, or even Josh Charles on The Good Wife) over Noth.

It would seem like a sure bet to me as well. I'm just passing along what I read from Karger. He indicated its absence from the National Board of Review's Top 10 and its omission from the list of Broadcast Film Critics Association nomination list put it on the bubble.

As far as Good Wife actors go, I might have gone with Alan Cumming over Chris Noth.

I thought the same thing about The Kids Are All Right.

  16. Remember that Golden Globes use the calendar year, not TV season, so Noth's eligibility period includes his big story arc at the end of Season 1 with the conviction getting thrown out and the like. (The eligibility period also makes the nod for Lea Michele more defensible, since it includes her "Shelby's my mother!" arc, which gave us some decent work from her in "I Dreamed a Dream" and "Poker Face.")

OK, I know it was an outside chance, but I really thought Scott Pilgrim could have been nominated for Best Musical/Comedy. Right? Or best foreign film (since it was decidedly Canadian)?

    Yay for Walking Dead too!

I think tghis is the point when the Fug recapper was resorting to bourbon to get through this:

Just LOOK AT IT. Have you ever seen such milquetoast disgust? Such piercingly mild disdain? And the rebuke he delivers: So weakly stern! See, they had a dog, and he loved it, but it was dying. This made him sad. So they drove it to the vet and the dog was all sick and JLH cradled it and sang. She sang and sang and sang! Because he loved that dang dog. And so did she. He was a good dog, gol’ darnit! But when the time came, he couldn’t go in, so JLH carried the dog inside, and…. basically, twenty-five minutes later, the anecdote about her golden-voiced love of animals ends with him saying that whenever he thought of her, he thought of their dead dog. But now, he will think only of Kind Touching. This is apparently a downgrade. He gently hates on her one more time and she cries.

    Brilliant.

  19. I admired Scott Pilgrim a lot, but it's way too modern and trendy to get honors from the notoriously stodgy (on the film side) HFPA. Oddly, they have the opposite issue on the TV side, where they tend to honor pretty young things with nominations and wins--sometimes deservedly (Keri Russell, SMG, Jennifer Garner, Amber Tamblyn, Claire Danes) and sometimes not (Jessica Alba, Anna Paquin, Piper Perabo).
