One thing of note is that the official press releases all refer to her simply as "Selina Kyle," and don't use "Catwoman" at any point. If I were a betting man, I'd say we may not see Hathaway in the Catwoman getup, but rather as a suave cat burglar.
Also, this reinforces that Hathaway is making interesting choices. While she's taking paycheck roles, they're often opportunities to work with name people (this, Devil Wears Prada, Alice in Wonderland), or flex her muscles in a different direction (doing action in this and Get Smart, for instance), or work for a very short schedule and take home money (I'd be shocked if she worked for more than a week on Valentine's Day, and I'm sure she made good money for it).
I would also argue that Christopher Cox falls into the Not Pretty/Not Sexy category. (See also the discussion of "SexyUgly" in "Kissing Jessica Stein.")
She's gorgeous (and quite frequently naked in LOTD), to be sure, but I can see where Isaac comes from--she doesn't do "sultry sexy," but much more of a "girl next door" type of thing. It's the Angelina-Aniston dilemma. Aniston's probably prettier, but Angelina is "sexier."
What I think we're missing is that Catwoman isn't necessarily about being conventionally, aggressively sexy. It can just as easily be about carrying a demure quality, as Pfeiffer did -- there's a quiet to Anne Hathaway's beauty that delivers that, and she's proven that she can play tough-and-troubled in L&OD, so I think this can work.
Also bouts of tough (when not overwhelmed by the troubled) and troubled in Rachel Getting Married. Well there were no bouts of troubled, just sort of a steady stream of it.
I object, in that Hathaway occupies the upper left of that grid. Ms. Hendricks is outside of the grid in the sense of beyond beyond the grid. Shes' a gridbuster. Elisabeth Moss can have the lower left of the grid.

Still not sexy. Pretty, beautiful even, not sexy.
ReplyDeleteStill not sexy. Pretty, beautiful even, not sexy. And that's a role, Eartha Kitt aside, that requires sexy. Julie Newmar.
ReplyDeleteWOuld that make you "Gaysian?'
ReplyDeleteI think I agree about Eartha Kitt not bringing the sexy. She sure brought the demented camp.
Best. Webhead. Ever. Totally forgot Lee Meriwether.
ReplyDeleteEartha Kitt? Not sexy? Wow, do I obviously have different tastes.
ReplyDeleteAmen, Isaac. I think we've had this discussion about Anne Hathaway before. And yes, yes, yes on Eartha Kitt. She's not pretty. She is sexy.
ReplyDeleteThis is a grid-able thing.
Pretty Not Pretty
Sexy C. Hendricks A. Jolie
Not Sexy A Hathaway C. Cox*
* Courtney Cox, not SEC Chairman Christopher Cox
I would also argue that Christopher Cox falls into the Not Pretty/Not Sexy category. (See also the discussion of "SexyUgly" in "Kissing Jessica Stein.")
ReplyDeleteLuckily, Tom Hardy will be there to cover the sexy shortfall. There's no resisting Handsome Bob!
ReplyDeleteWait, did you not see Love and Other Drugs?
ReplyDeleteAlso, how is Courteney Cox not sexy? SHE HAS TELEKINETIC POWERS.
ReplyDeleteCourtney, even.

ReplyDeleteGood points from both of you.
