DEEP (DISH) TROUBLE: Our Chicagoland readers will be despondent at the news that Giordano's has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, though it's remaining in operation for now.

And yet the best Chicago style pizza is to be had at Zachary's here in Berkeley & Oakland.

(Also, west coast chain Round Table is also under Chapter 11 now -- tough days to be in the pizza business, apparently)

  2. The franchised Pizzeria Uno did a prepackaged Chapter 11 last year as well.

Walked past the flagship tonight and it had plenty of people dining in.

Gino's East has got to be feeling either really good or really scared.

Meh.  I'm not that concerned, since we have so may better options.  It's not like we're living in California.  (cough)

Yeah, I'm not too torn up about it either. It's not famous, but Calo's deep dish > Giordano's any day.

  6. Giordano's was my favorite, but I recognize that many other options opened up in Chicago after I left in 1995. I still prefer it to Gino's. Haven't been to Calo's yet, and will have to give Zachary's a try.

It sounded like Giordano's problems stemmed from overpaying for Florida real estate in a poorly targeted expansion, so I hope they'll just screw over some creditors and shareholders and keep going after a reorg. I won't care much if they jettison the Sarasota branch.
