FOUR ROOMS: Frequent ALOTT5MA Piñata Richard Rushfield talks to Alexis Grace, Jackie Tohn, Bucky Covington and (shockers) Carly Smithson about what Hollywood week is really like. Good read. Meanwhile, Dan Fienberg's faster than I am, so here are his thoughts on tonight's Idol episode.
Thus far, I have to say, this has been a darn entertaining season and the new judges are not getting in its way.
I totally agree with Adam. I figured that I would hate the new judges and that would be my excuse to finally let go of Idol this season. But I've been sucked back in. I give a lot of credit to JLo. I thought she would only be entertaining if a total diva, but she's been sweet without being afraid to critique, and I think she keeps the other two on track without their egos suffering. Steven Tyler has been (mostly) funny but relevant. And without Simon there, Randy has backed away from the ridiculous and (at least in Hollywood) seemed to be more serious about judging again. So long as they don't screw up who gets picked for the live run, we seem to be in good shape.
ReplyDeleteI first tuned in at the start of Hollywood week, and I agree with surprise that it still feels like the same show even with the new judges. J. Lo takes the job so much more seriously than I would have expected, to her credit. I'm not sure yet how Steven Tyler is going to fit in, he's got Paula-style "loose cannon" elements and I'm not completely convinced by his Randy/Kara-style "old pro" overtures.
ReplyDeleteSo the new judges aren't sinking the show, but I'm with Cecilia: a crappy set of contestants will make me check out on the season pretty fast.
I'm enjoying the new judges much more than I thought I would. Both JLo and Steve Tyler seem to have brought a sincere enthusiasm and honesty to the process, which is a refreshing departure from Simon's world-weary cynicism.
