WHERE WERE YOU WHEN THE IDOL STOPPED SUCKING?  Now that wasn't so bad, and most of the credit goes to Lady Gaga who taught the kids an obvious, but necessary lesson -- to sell a song, don't just sing the words. Become the narrator. And she was fun; making Scotty uncomfortable was the highlight of the night.

Singing-wise while Haley's "I Who Have Nothing" was only about 80% Sparks, 80% of that performance is still pretty darn nice. Unfortunately she also had the worst performance of the night, getting swallowed up whole by Michael Jackson's "Earth Song."

The G-Rated Lambert was his normally competent self; Lauren's a bit outmatched by the competition at this point and just hasn't developed; and Scotty ... I can't root for someone who chose that song, this week. Cannot.

1.) Wouldn't Scotty have been in the middle of Circle Time when the world stopped turning?

2.) Lauren: "I want to let people know it's okay to rebuild their lives!"
Tornado Victims: "Really? Wow. I was uneasy about moving back out of this refrigerator box, but if Lauren Alaina says it's okay to go back to running water, then I guess it must be!"

3.) I didn't think Haley was great by any stretch on "Earthsong," but it was nowhere near as ridiculous Lauren trying to sell "Trouble," or the insipid songs Scotty and James chose in the second half.

4.) Lady Gaga: best Idol mentor ever? Who would've thunk it?

  2. I'm so sick of Scotty's schtick. Enough with the God, faith and apple pie crap. That was a ridiculous, calculated song choice this week. Also, why didn't he get the "you didn't live up to the previous performance" critique that Haley got in the first half of the show? Why do I keep watching this show? I'm certain I can find something else to do with 2 1/2 hours of my life every week.

I can't stand that Alan Jackson song, and here's why: I know that "America" was attacked on 9/11, and that since I'm an elite Northeast liberal intellectual who actually does know the difference between Iraq and Iran, my opinion doesn't matter. But dammit, Alan Jackson. You live in Tennessee. The world did not stop turning there. You were watching the thing on television. It stopped turning in New York, and while you were writing simple songs about Jesus, we actually had to live through the suffering and aftermath of that tragedy. So STFU.

I'm not going to hold any of that against Scotty, because he's too young to understand that kind of stuff. The only thing I'm going to hold against Scotty is that he continues to be boring.

And I'm going to hold against Randy the fact that he thinks Steve Perry is the second-best singer in rock and roll.

Who does he think is first?

  6. I believe that would be Randy sucking up to Steven Tyler, Jim.

  7. I'll admit that I rather like that Alan Jackson song, and I feel perfectly fine about people who didn't live in NYC (or Washington) feeling affected by the attack.  I think that there were a lot of reactions to 9/11, and this one felt valid to me.  Just an opinion, though.

Anyway:  Last night's show was full of ups and downs.  I'd say that the two best performances (again) were Haley (with I Who Have Nothing) and Lauren (with Anyway).  The worst performances were Haley (with Earth Song) and Scotty (with Young Blood), as well as the judges with their inconsistencies.  Yes, Haley deserved to be criticized for Earth Song, but so did James, whose Don't Stop Believing was merely okay karaoke and Scotty, whose Young Blood was downright laughable, and not in the way he intended.

Very good:  Haley (IWHN), Lauren (Anyway)

    Good-ish:  Lauren (Trouble), Scotty (WWYWTWST)

    Fair:  Both of James' performances

Poor:  Haley (Earth Song), Scotty (Young Blood)

So, who goes?  Conventional wisdom says Haley---weak first performance + talking back to the judges.  Plus the placement of her performances had her done long before the end of the show.  But I think that it's going to be one of the three frontrunners, and I've got this sneaking suspicion that it will be James.  His performances were weak last week, and he was both merely okay and a bit one-note this week.  Plus, no criticisms to rile up his constituency.

Haley would be in decent shape right now except last night she sounded like a brat and that always hurts vote totals.  (Why don't judges judge? I hear Simon in my head saying "that was cabaret" and such.  Really wish the judges would criticize other than to say "don't sing songs that weren't hits".)

I liked Lauren.  I don't think she was awful.  I'd like Haley more if she'd sing instead of posture.  Scotty was awful and should go home, and James should be next to him.

Even if you lived in Arizona (as I did then) the world could stop turning if you had a friend and client who had taken his wife to NYC for a delayed honeymoon and went to the WTC that morning for sightseeing...

I'll take that song anytime over 'Don't Stop Believin'....that was a pure cheese performance by Durbin...and why on earth di he start the song sitting down (while asking the audience to stand up)?

Loved Scotty and Laure in the first round and Haley in the second.

    No love for Durbin here.

jeez...there 16 with mikes and cameras stuck in their face, give'm a little break.

Gaga was good but the songs in her round other than Haley really sucked...Love Potion #9, really?

You STFU. What you have to say has no more or less weight than what Scotty has to say. Or Alan Jackson, for that matter. Get over yourself.

  13. What is amazing about Gaga is just when you think she has maxed out, she finds new ways to shock you.  This week - platforms with penises as heels.  Well played, Gaga, well played.
