I BELIEVE: I'm trying to think of the last championship won by a non-Philadelphia team that made me as happy as the Dallas Mavericks' victory tonight. On Twitter, a friend suggested the New York Giants win over the Patriots; before that, I guess, the Red Sox in 2004 and Syracuse in 2003 (combination of family and Boeheim reasons). You?
My parents (don't follow basketball) and my wife (hates sports) were both excited to see tonight's game, only because they were told that the Heat were losing and would lose the series if they did lose. Both my parents and my wife said the same thing: "Who, besides the Heat fans, is rooting for the Heat?"
ReplyDeleteMy in-laws are thrilled!!
ReplyDeleteAlso suck it LeBron!
ReplyDelete2005 Sox, of course.
ReplyDeleteYou know what I meant. A non-Chicago team, JJF?
ReplyDeleteOther than the White Sox in '05 (all my best friends are huge fans) this is the happiest I've ever been about a championship not won by the Yankees.
ReplyDeleteI was rooting for the Mavs (mainly because Cuban amuses me and I like to see guys who were dominant but don't have a lot left in the tank win rings), but not against the Heat. I thought The Decision was stupid and classless, but it wasn't so bad that I get the universal hatred.
ReplyDeleteNon-snarky response, it would be the 2004 Red Sox for me (at the time, later revalations about the extent of their cheating aside).
ReplyDeleteI'm just glad America can join together to celebrate this victory by upstanding citizens like Jason Kidd and Deshawn Stevenson.
ReplyDeleteI immediately thought of Giants vs. Patriots. Good vs. Evil is much more fun than "Team from [X] vs. Team from [Y]", especially when you don't live in X or Y. [When you live in Y and why happens to be Evil, it's sort of a wash, though. Lesson of Superbowl XLV]
ReplyDeleteAs a lifetime Cleveland sports fan who will probably never see a championship in her lifetime (I was born the year the Browns won their last championship), I couldn't be happier.
ReplyDeleteThe NBA just hasn't been interesting since George Mikan retired. And what's this shot-clock stuff?

As a Clevelander, can I chime in and say two things? First, suck it, LeBron. Second, I LOVE that the word "schadenfreude" is trending on Yahoo right now, and the Heat's loss can be the ONLY reason why.
ReplyDeleteOne of my best college friends is a Clevelander too, and he has been insanely happy (at least, as divined from his Facebook postings) since the final horn sounded. It's certainly not the same as winning a championship would be for Clevelanders, but on an emotional level, it seems like it's very, very close.
ReplyDeleteAs a lifelong Cleveland sports fan who has yet to see a champtionship, this has to be close to what one feels like. I couldn't stop smiling all day. Usually our former heroes come back to bite us. Not this time.
