SUPER STAR BOMB POP: Amid this recent trend of Cupcake Trucks and Taco Trucks and Sausage Trucks and Dumpling Trucks (not yet in Phila, sigh), is it too much to ask that on hot days we could get a basic ice cream van to swing by the offices of Center City, Philadelphia? Because they would make money. Believe me.

The Mister Softee jingle is a soothing, nostalgia-inducing sound on days like this, for sure.

Now, when they linger outside my house on my day off and play the jingle for a half-hour, I'm more than willing to ship a few of them off to Philly.

I was just noting yesterday that there are a lot of carts and trucks around my work, but there was not at that moment a hot dog stand close enough for me to consider worth it to walk to. I passed a kebob cart, a couple coffee carts, and a smoothie truck. But no hot dog cart. I would have bought a hot dog.

...is it just me, or does soft serve just not taste as good as it used to? I wonder if they've changed the formula or if it's my taste buds.

We need a piragua vendor!

"It's hotter than the islands out today
and Mister Softee's trying to shut me down,
But I keep scraping by the fading light,
Mi 'pana, this is my town

Piragua, piragua,
new block of ice, piragua
piragua, piragua,
so sweet and nice, piragua
tengo de mango
tengo de parcha
tengo de pina y fresa
tengo de chino"

(Which my kiddo has changed to
"tengo de mango
tengo de chino
tengo de sangre
por los vampiros")

Bring back Good Humor's "Candy Center Crunch"! A solic block of chocolate inside the ice cream - doesn't get much better than that.

Are ice cream trucks not post-ironic yet? Can't we all just agree that colored corn syrup and sugary frozen milk should be immune from cultural trends?

Related point: A gelato truck is not a suitable replacement.

8. I would gladly send the mr. softee truck that keeps circling my block down from nyc to philly. I can hear the jingle all the time. FROM THE FIFTEENTH FLOOR.

9. I still prefer the Dairy Queen soft serve to the rest--it's ice milk, not custard or cream--which drives my husband nuts since we live so close to a Rita's.

No, it totally is. If it is good gelato.

Or if it is hot enough.

Our local ice cream van plays Christmas carols. Hearing "Good King Wenceslas" through an ice cream van sound system in the middle of summer gives off a creepy vibe.
