TONY SCOTT, 1944-2012: Unlike his brother Ridley, Tony Scott's films were not typically critical favorites, but were nonetheless successful--often extremely so. He helped Tom Cruise become a movie star, directing
Top Gun and
Days of Thunder, was a staple director for Denzel Washington in action hero mode (
Deja Vu, Crimson Tide, Man On Fire, Taking of Pelham 123, Unstoppable), and helped establish Will Smith as a big action star with
Enemy of the State. But despite all the success,
Scott apparently took his own life yesterday afternoon.
You left out his best film: Tarantino's True Romance. Also, as a producer, Scott Free Productions is responsible for The Good Wife, Numb3rs, and films including In Her Shoes.
ReplyDeleteWhat a damn shame.
They are just rumors at this point, but I saw some commenters saying that he had been diagnosed with inoperable brain cancer. Who knows if it's true -- either way, it's incredibly sad.
ReplyDeleteI don't know what to say, except that Crimson Tide is a seriously under-rated movie. RIP.
ReplyDeleteLove Crimson Tide, Unstoppable and particularly The Hunger.

ReplyDeleteTragic. I liked his movies. It never once occurred to me that he was Ridley Scott's brother.
ReplyDeleteAnd then, of course, there was the third brother, A.O. "Tony" Scott, who just loved to pan his two siblings' works! (J/k. I think.)
ReplyDeleteWith respect to all the films named above, I concur with the good feelings. But The Last Boy Scout? Dayenu. I will watch the hell out of that movie anytime I find it. RIP Tony. I hope you are somewhere dancing a jig.
