YOU THINK YOU'RE THE CLEVER LITTLE GIRL WHO KNOWS SOMETHING. THERE'S SO MUCH YOU DON'T KNOW, SO MUCH. WHAT DO YOU KNOW, REALLY? YOU'RE JUST AN ORDINARY LITTLE GIRL, LIVING IN AN ORDINARY LITTLE TOWN: Criticwire's weekly survey asked critics
to name their favorite underrated Hitchcock film, with
Frenzy,
The Trouble With Harry and
Shadow of a Doubt among those with multiple nods.
Wait, Shadow of a Doubt is underrated? I think it's easily top-tier Hitchcock.
ReplyDelete(And coincidentally, I'm savoring my reading of Rebecca for the first time and can't wait to see that Hitchcock did with this material.)
Rope is probably my overall choice. Get past the gimmick and it's a really tight, bizarre story that gets more and more chilling as time goes by. Also worth watching for one of the rare out-and-out Jimmy Stewert a-hole roles.

My favorite Hitchcock is "Notorious" which I think is underrated and often forgotten among his films. I probably like it because it's just as much a romance as it is mystery/suspense. And it has Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman (at the peak of their looks and talent, and with fantastic chemistry) and Claude Rains as the villain. Not to mention a great domineering mother character. What could be bad?
ReplyDeleteYou really are your father's daughter, aren't you...
ReplyDeleteShadow of a Doubt is one of my favorites, so I'm glad to see it get love. I think among people who have watched a lot of Hitchcock it's well-regarded, but it never quite made the leap to everyday knowledge, like Psycho or North by Northwest.
ReplyDeleteMy sister, a friend, and I used to get together and watch "Hitch flicks" every month or so. Some of them, I haven't seen in a long, long time, and Vertigo was always checked out at our local Blockbuster, so I haven't seen it at all! Time for a re-education.
Notorious is my favorite as well, though I do also love Shadow of a Doubt...
