I SAVED LEAP DAY! AND CONNECTED WITH MY SON! AND SOLVED A BIG CASE OF MURDER! The Writers Guild of America has announced its nominations for the best of television in 2012, with separate honors for comedy and drama, for new series and returning series, and for episodes of particular note. Breaking Bad has 4/6 of the dramatic episode nominations (with another going to the most infuriating episode of Mad Men); Modern Family 3/6 of the comedic.

1. I would have figured that "Far Away Places," with its separate yet interlocked vignettes, would have been much more WGA bait (though the episode works partially because of the direction).
ReplyDelete2. I'm surprised that no Louie made it into the single episode nominees, but that may be because they can't nominate multi-part arcs there, just single episodes.
3, Is there any question that Berlanti ought to win in Long Form? My understanding was that Hemingway and Gelhorn was god-awful, and Hatfields not much better.
4.I think Mindy Project is finding its footing now, but those first few episodes were awfully rough, and that nomination doesn't make sense to me other than as a "we love Mindy Kaling!" nomination.
5. Seeing the full list of Nashville writers reminds me what a damn impressive staff they put together.
Nice to see "Episodes" get a writing nomination (although I have no idea which episode "Episode 9" is). I really enjoy that show, and it's often overlooked.

ReplyDeleteI'm not a Modern Family watcher - so can someone who watches it and Parks and Recreation explain to me why "The Debate" shouldn't be the hands-down winner here?

ReplyDeleteI do not understand MF dominating writing nominations - i think the writing is the biggest problem with it these days, and the performances are making it watchable in spite of itself. I get why it wins Best Comedy awards - the ensemble is amazing - but writers should know better.
So I should actually start watching all the Mindy Project episodes that have piled up on my dvr? I got pretty close earlier this week to deleting all of them for space. It's a show I want to like but didn't have the patience for after the first couple of episodes.

ReplyDeleteSeason 1 -- when they were poking fun at cultural differences between America and Britain -- was outstanding. And it's amazing how much I love Beverly and Sean as a couple, as I've never cared for either of those actors in anything else I've seen (Black Books, Green Wing, Confetti, etc.).

ReplyDeleteI really enjoy the way they're writing Mindy (and Josh, who is really a delightfully specific character). I agree with all the folks suggesting that the supporting cast isn't fleshed out enough, but I enjoy the show.

ReplyDeleteIf you only watched the first 2 then I would say to give it a few more episodes to grow on you. It has improved immensely since the early goings.

ReplyDeleteAs to why Win, Lose, or Draw wasn't nominated, I thought it might have been an eligibility period issue, but it aired during the required time. I guess they had to make room for all the Modern Family nods.
I watch both. I like both. But I generally laugh a lot more at MF. I suspect it's just a matter of different tastes.
