IT'S BEEN SUCH A LONG TIME:In more thinking about the Rock Hall of Fame, isn't it kind of odd that Boston has never even made the long list for nomination? Admittedly, their output after the debut album is scattered, but a 17x platinum debut, 5/6 albums having gone platinum in the US, 5 top 20 singles, and substantial influence on the rock scene would seem to be enough to make the ballot, right? Does Wenner have some vendetta against them?
Boston isn't already in the Hall? This invalidates everything.
ReplyDeleteThey're just another band outta Boston.
ReplyDeleteWell, I mean, quality should count for something, right?
ReplyDeleteYep - they go in the Hall of the Inoffensive.
ReplyDeleteBoston's eponymous debut album stands above those as the pinnacle of 70's schlock rock, showing how the style could be perfected, especially when going to the limits of what the recording technology could do with overdubbing guitars and vocals.
ReplyDeleteThis is not at all surprising and is not in the least an injustice. Their case for the HOF is one huge-selling album that features one classic-rock staple. I know there were other successful songs and other albums, but those things had no real long-lasting impact, so one song on one album is basically their historical legacy. They get no points for critical reception, for being pioneers in any particular area, or for influencing others. They get demerits for being utterly derivative, for leading from the rear. For what it's worth, the Wenner faction hates them. One could argue that their closest comps are bands like Bush and Stone Temple Pilots, maybe Howard Jones and the Thompson Twins. The only way Boston should get into the HOF is if HOF voters decide that commercial units moved is the only important criterion, which, of course, may already be the case.
ReplyDeleteBoston blends together with Air Supply?
ReplyDeleteFinn, I usually agree with you, but...come on, man.
In terms of being generally competent, inoffensive, AOR 70's rock? Sure.
ReplyDeleteBut you would never hear them back-to-back on any radio station, right? Or even on the same station.
ReplyDeleteInteresting, all of the other bands you listed seem (to me) to be in the same category...I guess I just see Air Supply as...something else.
