SO LONG, FAREWELL: The last surviving child among the von Trapp family singers, Maria,
has passed away at the age of 99 at her home in Vermont. It was her childhood suffering from scarlet fever which prompted her father, Captain Georg von Trapp, to hire a governess for the family (also named Maria), and you pretty much know the rest of
the real story.
One caveat - I think she's the last surviving child who was alive when Maria came to be governess, but I believe that Georg and Maria's children together (Rosemarie, Eleanore, and Johannes, half-siblings to the original seven) were also von Trapp Family Singers. Eleanore was 5 when they won the Salzburg Music Festival and Rosemarie was 7 or 8 (there's a discrepancy about her birthdate - on immigration documents sworn under oath, Maria dated it as 2 months after her marriage to Georg, but otherwise she dated it a year later). Johannes was born later while the family was on tour singing, but he joined the family singers.
