Looking at the wikipedia topic 1964 in music and births, 1964 was a good year. Highlighting the vagaries of wikipedia, neither Amos or Merchant are listed.
Tori was born in August of 1963, Merchant in October of 1963; both are listed in 1963 in music. (Tori shares an exact birthdate with James DeBarge, of all people.)
Is that what Music writing looks like in the NYT? I should be reading that. Nice article. 50, of course, and the hearts of their careers in the 80s and 90s is why we get three in one, or one with three, but there is reverence and time taken. Its nice that Music doesn't seem to have that gender problem that somebody is always always talking about with respect to writing. Indeed, unless my memory is failing, and I too am almost 50, I think the press takes women singers with solemnity in their voices or a touch of folk or mourning in their souls even more seriously than men who do… age is a part of it, except for Dylan, who is Dylan, and apparently was always Dylan from like in the crib, until now.

ReplyDeleteTwo of my favorites, and template-builders for the way I thought about songwriting in my first years.
ReplyDeleteIn the crib, and for a long time, Dylan was just Zimmerman.
ReplyDeleteAnd here I thought zimmerman was that guy who hates black people more than that guy Kanye West thinks hates black people. shows how little I know ;)
