MAYBE SOMETHING WITHOUT DRUG DEALERS, THIS TIME?  We've done our year of The Wire, and caught up on Breaking Bad before its final season began. [And while not discussing it here, I did race through Band of Brothers during June, and my goodness is that portrayal of true heroism a worthy antidote to all the darkness.]

Well, summer's here, and there's nothing that great on tv, is there?  So tell me what's on Netflix or HBO Go that I should start marathoning next.

  1. I just made my way through the first season (6 episodes) of "Rectify" to get ready for the second season that just started on Sundance. It's pretty heavy and moves very slowly, but it's a good show.

I want to start "Top of the Lake" next, but I need a breather from heavy. I've been palate cleansing with "Bob's Burgers" and rewatching "Chuck."

I'm watching Rectify too, and it is very good.

  3. I know it's silly, but I just marathoned "Sex and the City" and really enjoyed it. I watched it back in the day and it was fine, but I found it much more relatable (minus the expensive wardrobes) now that I'm in my early 30s as opposed to back when it was originally on.

  4. I just binged watched "The Sopranos", and when the episodes are compressed like that, the ending makes much more sense.

  5. I too was going to mention "Rectify." It's a worthy antidote to all the brightness. It's good, but sheesh - it's a downer.

The family binging on Doctor Who continues (we're nearing the end of rebooted S3 w/Tennant). I'm midway through S1 of Hannibal, still mainlining Bob's Burgers (and as the dad of a recent bat mitzvah, recommend the "Mazel-Tina" episode highly), catching up on IFC's Maron and Comedy Bang Bang, and have S1 of Fargo waiting in reserve. In real time, watching Halt and Catch Fire (pretty good), Under the Dome (um, yeah), and Extant (intrigued by premiere and reserving judgment beyond that). Just finished a reasonably satisfying season of 24. And as a completist, I'm in for the final season of the increasingly bizarre Wilfred.
AND, we just got HBO as a throw-in for a year with our FIOS renewal, so lots of stuff awaits. My wife is catching up on GoT, and I'm planning on starting S1 of Silicon Valley. Plus John Oliver's show. Plus movies. Before that happened, I was planning on watching 3 seasons of Veronica Mars. There is no time/there is only time.

I hear that some people read books?

If you haven't watched Masters of Sex yet, I recommend that. S2 just started on Showtime, but I think S1 is available on Netflix.

I watched all of Silicon Valley season 1 the other night. Lots of fun, though complaints about the show's lack of women have merit.

I've also been rewatching The X-Files and listening to Kumail Nanjiani's The X-Files Files podcast.

  10. I was thinking of rewatching some X-Files, after listening to an Extra Hot Great podcast recently where they entered "Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose" into the canon. I'm adding it to my list!

  11. Yes. It's definitely not breezy viewing. I realized the night I watched the pilot that I couldn't watch it right before going to bed. It disturbed me that much--not scary, just lots of stuff to process.

I'm probably the last person in the world to get to it, but I'm finally starting From The Earth To The Moon, starring literally pretty much every good character actor in existence. (The first actor on screen? Future Senator Al Franken, playing Eisenhower/JFK/LBJ science advisor Jerom Wiesner, a very, very smart man who was one of the most prominent voices against manned space exploration, regarding it as far less useful than unmanned probes.)

Besides that, still working my way through Orange Is The New Black. I might also do a Comeback marathon before season two starts.

You are not the last person to get to FTETTM - that'll go on my list as well.

  14. Has everyone watched "Terriers" yet? Still a relatively quick (one cable season) and absolutely tremendous watch on Netflix.

Well, you can't really mention GoT without hearing about people who read books.

Rectify is on my to-do list, but I might wait on season 2 until it hits Netflix, since one of the very few bad things about DirecTV is that SUNDANCE IS STILL NOT IN HD.

Last show I bingewatched was The Thick of It on Hulu. If you haven't seen it, you'll love it. If you have seen it, you already love it.

If you haven't watched Veep, I highly recommend streaming that on HBO Go. Season 1 was good, but Seasons 2 and 3 are significantly better. Very funny - especially if paired with a "Thick of It" binge.

    Orphan Black!

  20. It's not available streaming anywhere (as far as I know), but Shout! Factory has been putting out very nice (and quite affordable--sub $1/episode) sets of LA Law, which I've been watching. Yes, some parts of the show haven't aged terribly well,(the first season's child abduction plot is weakened by the fact that Michelle Greene is the weak link of the cast) but it's fascinating to see the parts that have aged well (the internal firm politics, the Markowitz/Kelsey relationship), to see bunches of folks in small roles who later went on to much fame, and to be reminded that the most memorable thing in the first season (the Venus Butterfly) was actually a comic relief plotline.

Ah yes, Orphan Black is on my Amazon Prime watchlist, and Veep is another on my HBOGo list. I can't imagine I'll ever quite catch up.

  22. I'll second Wilfred for dark comedy with a touch of the absurd. Last week's episode was excellent!

  23. Orange is the New Black, Friday Night Lights, Orphan Black. If you want something dark and twisted, try Hannibal.

No one's mentioned True Detective? That one will stick with you.
If you want something less heavy and bitter, try Call the Midwife -- sweet and nostalgic.

That was going to be my suggestion as well. So very, very good.

I love both dearly. I think Veep would be an excellent binge watch - the jokes build over time, so you'd catch things that I missed (with my Swiss cheese memory) watching week to week.

  28. I think it would be interesting, since we have two too-short seasons of each, to do a side-by-side with the two shared-secret serial killer shows currently thrilling me in very different ways: Hannibal and Bates Motel.

  29. Wait. WHAT? Adam hasn't seen Arrested Development?

  30. I don't watch quite as much tv as some, apparently (I'm looking at YOU, Adam C!), but my "plans" for the summer are to watch Season 2 of Orphan Black, the rest of Season 2 of OITNB, and Season 3 of Veep. I am intrigued by Extant. I could try to get into Doctor Who again, but I've given it many, many tries...

I'm just as G-d made me, sir.

On Doctor Who, Shonda advised on these pages to start with season 1 of the reboot and work your way through chronologically from there - I think that's wise counsel (though we actually started with what were then the most recent eps available on Prime, the first half of Matt Smith's final season).

Also in the heavy going but great TV realm, The Bridge -- S1 is available on Prime (and I imagine Netflix), and S2 just started on FX.

  33. Both are on our binge list....
