WAIT. SOMEONE SAW THE JUDGE? Nominations for the Screen Actor Guild Awards have been announced; if you've been following the awards beat there aren't many surprises other than the complete shutting-out of Selma, while Jake Gyllenhaal and Jennifer Aniston have been recognized.

[Golden Globe nominations tomorrow.]

  1. Neither Duvall nor Downey is actively BAD in The Judge, it's just so cookie-cutter and overlong. It's still a random nomination, though not as random as Naomi Watts for St. Vincent, which might actually be an actively bad performance (there's certainly nothing special about it aside from the thick Russshan accent she puts on).

Also, given that theatre award groups have consistently recognized The Witch as a leading role and that she's top-billed, the choice to push Meryl in supporting is odd, though perhaps it's because they think Moore is already locked in there.

Is Selma any good? One of the most compelling parts of African-American history is the saga of the Tuskegee Airmen -- my best friend's Uncle Frank was one, in fact -- but both movies about them, HBO's Tuskegee Airmen and Lucas' Red Wings, were terrible movies, with a few good aerial combat scenes.

It has received very strong reviews. Here's the first trailer:

It's good, though uneven in spots. David Oyelowo's performance is really solid and compelling. They hone in on such a specific period in time, which works well for them and lets them tell just one story really cleanly. I did some ugly crying. There are some really great directorial choices that make me eager to see what she does next, too.
