ACROSS THE ATLANTIC SEA: The ThingThrowers have been gracious enough to provide reading suggestions for my mother during European trips--her request this time:
This time travel will take us from Lisbon, up the coast via Oporto to Santiago de Compostello, then through the Pyrenees with stops in Leon, Bilbao, Pamplona, Bielsa and ending in Barcelona. Oh and there are pre and post tour stops in Manchester, England.  I've already read Shadow of the Wind, which I loved.  Go!

Highly recommend Jose Saramago's Baltasar and Blimunda for the first leg of the trip. It's wonderful.

I don't have anything horribly specific, but I'll not that I've been enjoying a biography of Frances Hodgson Burnett, who was born in Manchester before moving to Tennessee with her family at age 16...in 1865.

That itinerary is to die for. My envy knows no bounds. I'm unhelpful because I am not a read-about-where-I-am vacation reader, I'm a read-what-I-can't-stand-not-to-read vacation reader. But your mother is going to have a great time! SWOON

  4. If your mom is at all into mysteries, I would recommend the books by Arturo Perez-Reverte, especially The Club Dumas and The Flanders Panel.
