Certainly, the only new music that shows up in our car is stuff that my kids like (Katy Perry, etc.). It's funny, KFOG 104.5 continues to play new and interesting music that I generally like... e.g., Florence and the Machine... but even though I'll say to myself "oh, maybe I'll buy a few of their tracks" I never ever get around to it.

I am not that surprised. For me, personally, it was both the lack of leisure time after oh, about 31 (kid #1) and the fact that my post 30 life has been relatively...boring? smooth? that has led me to be kind of stagnant re: musical tastes. High school and college and immediately post-college were giant, momentous life changing eras and highly emotional eras. The music in my life at the time just had more meaning bc of what else was going on.

  5. I'll claim that. When I'm driving around town I listen to college radio. Primarily WRAS (for new music) or WREK (usually not as new, but weirder.)

Most music I buy or concerts I go to are because of college radio. The downside is I see fewer shows than I'd like because the band is usually taking the stage at midnight on a Wednesday. On the positive side, most of these shows are still $10-$15.

Bandcamp Weekly is a nice source for new music https://bandcamp.com/?show=124

  8. I generally listen to 80s new wave, so for me it stopped more like when I was 15. But I do enjoy SiriusXM's Alt Nation. That's where I heard Walk The Moon's "Shut Up And Dance. No matter your age, I think there's a good chance you'll like it. :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6JCLY0Rlx6Q

I'd claim it, except that the "new" music I like is really the same as music from before I turned 33.

This is the link you should share when you want to introduce the song. :)

But for the conspicuous lack of "My Blue Heavens" merengue scenes!

  14. I'm missing the link between 'popular' and 'new'. This chart clearly shows that teens listen to more popular artists (part of which, I suspect, is skewed from younger people having more time to listen to music). I'll gladly admit I listen to artists and bands who aren't Top 40. But thanks in large part to Spotify, I'm hearing new releases constantly.

I'll claim it. I started liking country and bluegrass around the time that I turned 30, and I am still finding a lot of new artists because of that.

I'm the exception only in that I think the age for me was closer to 23. Every time EW does one of those "20 years ago on the pop charts" lists, I barely know any songs if the list is post 1992.

I was old before I was old.
