THE LIFE AND TIMES OF SHAWN CARTER: I'm not going to link back to all the debates we had over whether Jay-Z was an appropriate headlining act for Bonnaroo this year -- the arguments were heated, and I'm sure we all regret some of the things we said back then. Anyway, here's the results, and if you drink every time H.O.V.A. plays lighting director, well ...

This is an open thread for ... whatever you fancy.

Ok, so, open thread: at least I don't have to thread-jack.  I know there are some New Pornographers fans around here, so I wanted to mention that I saw them in Calgary the other night.  And... it was a pretty good show.  I thought the setlist was amazing, but then again it had quite a few songs from Challengers and I think Challengers is their best album.
All of the albums were covered, and I can't really quibble with many of the song choices.  Some of the stuff from Together (an album I really like) just didn't work live -- especially "Your Hands (Together)".  I was looking forward to hearing it, because it's rather anthemic, but the band was just a little... off.
It was also great seeing the WHOLE band, including Neko Case.  (She wasn't with them the only other time I saw them, in 2006.)  Also, what's up with Dan Bejar?  According to an article in the Toronto Star, this is the first time he's on the road with them.  He would only come on stage for his songs... which seemed a little dickish, to me.  Still, a very good show.

  3. I should note that that it is the most white crowd I expect Jay-Z will ever perform in front of.

On the topic of concerts, I'm seeing Blitzen Trapper tonight.  Pretty excited...

Also, I'm going to be spending three weeks in the Bay Area at the end of the summer and I'm trying to figure out what I'm going to do.  Anyone know of good all-ages music clubs in San Francisco?
