THIS WEEK IN THE SORKINVERSE: First trailer for the Aaron Sorkin-penned, David Fincher-directed, Eisenberg-and-Timberlake-starring Facebook movie The Social Network is now online. And he's now optioned the rights to Andrew Young's The Politician, a recent memoir by a staffer to a southern former Senator who ran for President again in 2007-08, only to ... yeah, that guy. Sorkin plans to both write and direct this one, and while many see Dennis Quaid as a natural to play the lead, I think it's a part Greg Kinnear was born to play.

  1. Didn't we have this conversation a few months back?  How can it be anyone other than Aaron Eckhart?

As I said in the boardroom, I just want John Edwards to be humiliated and just stand there in his humiliation and be humiliated.  And get used to it.

So the summer has been a bit of a wash out for movies (TS3 not withstanding) but this autumn/winter looks pretty good!

  4. Seeing "The Social Network" preview in the theater yesterday made me want to cancel my Facebook account.

  5. Quaid isn't nearly smamy/slick enough.  Eckhart's got the smarm, but is a little too hard-edged in the smarm--it's got to be someone who's smooth (or who at least thinks he's smooth).  Kinnear works.  It also depends on whose story this ultimately is--is it Young's story or Edwards' story?

For someone we know can pull off the Sorkinese, how about Peter Krause as Edwards?  (Janel Moloney as the Rielle Hunter figure would also be interesting.)

  6. Also, I am not a big Radiohead fan (though I can rip through "Creep" pretty good on Rock Band), but that version of "Creep" is spectacular, especially with the pairing of the images.

  7. I humbly submit Don Johnson.  Yes, that Don Johnson.

  8. Kinnear or Krause would work - both have the hair. And the acting chops, of course. I have to admit though, I will not be disappointed if they cast Aaron Eckhart.

Janel Maloney as Rielle Hunter would be great! I wonder how many of Sorkin's usual suspects will turn up in this production.

Hard as I try, I can't express how excited that trailer just made me.  Wow.

<p>For the Edwards movie, you need a male lead who can (i) pull off the accent, and (ii) balance the smarminess with some redeeming features.  Possible candidate:  Kevin Bacon, Sorkin Veteran.

  11. The more times I watch the trailer (and I've watched it more than a few times), the more I love the final "I believe I deserve some recognition" exchange.

  12. I just saw the image-less trailer at the movies last night, and that was done so well - it got me excited just with dialogue.  This was even better.

  13. I would like to throw Jon Hamm in the ring to play John Edwards.

My only issue with the trailer is that "genius writes in marker on a window pane" is by now a full-on cliche. Please, no more.

Whilst I love the idea of Kinnear as Edwards he is currently playing JFK opposite Katie Holmes. Could the echoes of one role affect the dramatisation of the next?
How about Patrick Wilson  (Little Children) as Edwards?
