THE TALL ONE WANTS WHITE BREAD, TOASTED, DRY, WITH NOTHIN' ON IT: For the first time,
whole wheat bread sales figures have surpassed those for white bread. [Technically, only on the revenue side; in terms of volume, "Americans bought 1.5 billion packages of white bread in the last year, a 3 percent decrease, and 1.3 billion packages of wheat bread, a 5 percent increase."]
I wonder if this will make the language richer...

ReplyDeleteWhere do you even buy white bread, other than ribs and BBQ beef joints where your food comes on paper plates?
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure my niece (age 7) has never had white bread - and if she has, it has probably been a handful of times or less.
ReplyDeleteI've been known to order white toast with eggs at the diner after a few drinks.
All bread is delicious.
ReplyDeleteWhat about peanut butter & jelly? I imagine that would be awful on whole wheat. I ate nothing but pb&j at lunch for years as a kid. I still enjoy one on occasion!

ReplyDeletecrunchy peanut on a thick slice of multigrain bread full of nuts is amazing. Especially with a thick slab of cheddar cheese.
ReplyDeleteAs a kid with hippie-ish parents, we only ate wheat bread. In fact, I did not know that white bread was considered "better", I remember feeling sorry for kids who had to eat white. Also? I make no claims whatsoever to ever having been a Cool Kid. Obviously.
