I'M SHAKING IN MY CUSTOM BABY SEAL LEATHER BOOTS: The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has released the list of eligible films from which two will be selected to lose to Toy Story 3 in the category of Best Animated Feature Film:
Alpha and Omega, Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore, Despicable Me, The Dreams of Jinsha, How to Train Your Dragon, Idiots and Angels, The Illusionist, Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole, Megamind, My Dog Tulip, Shrek Forever After, Summer Wars, Tangled, and Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue
How to Train Your Dragon is the easy call for a slot, and I'm still jazzed about Megamind. Still, The Illusionist (from the Triplets of Belleville director), Summer Wars (anime), Tangled (Disney) and The Dreams of Jinsha (China) have yet to be released stateside, and there may be another great one out there. Still, nothing is beating the evil bear who smells of strawberries. Nothing.

That's probably true, but don't forget, Lasseter runs Disney Animation now too.

  2. Allegedly, both Dreamworks and Disney are unhappy that they weren't able to round up another film for nomination, since that would have meant 5 nominees. Early word on Tangled is actually pretty decent, so it might sneak in to the third slot.

  3. Also, I didn't see it, but is there some reason Tales From Earthsea, the Studio Ghibli film released by Disney in August, wasn't eligible? Obviously, it had been released overseas several years ago, which might have killed it.

  4. I still don't get the love for Dragon. (Well, for the cute lead dragon, sure, but for the movie? Not so much.) I'm open to enjoying Megamind and Tangled. Actually, somehow missed Despicable Me when it was in the theaters, so I'm open to enjoying that one, too.

  5. By the way, in "smells of strawberries" news, we had to run my son's Lotso doll through the washing machine. It STILL smells like strawberries.

Exactly, Matt. It's covered in this eligibility rule:

A picture first theatrically exhibited outside the U.S. prior to the Los Angeles County qualifying run shall be eligible for submission provided the prior exhibition takes place in a commercial motion picture theater after January 1, 2009, with the following further conditions:

According to Wiki, Tales was released theatrically in Japan in 2006.

What kind of demented parent buys a kid a Lotso doll?

We don't have one, but I can understand the rationale. Lotso is cute and huggable, and the actual doll wouldn't be running a daycare prison. Also, one of the lessons of the series is that not all dolls act like their other models. Just because one Lotso went bad, doesn't mean they all will.

Wasn't the Tinker Bell movie a direct-to-DVD release? Does that qualify?

  10. They did a one week engagement in LA before the DVD was released to make it a qualifying release, basically to try and get to 15 eligibles so there would be 5 nominees rather than 3.

It's interesting to see the marketing for Tangled -- it's like a princess movie disguised as an action-adventure-starring-a-boy.

Just watch How to Train Your Dragon on bluray this weekend, and loved it just as much as when I saw it in the theater. I think it can give TS3 a run for its money, and I hope it gets one of the nomination slots.

Then again, I'm a cat person.
