"I LIKE WHEN THE MUSIC BLASTS AS SOON AS THE SITE LOADS. IT SIGNALS TO EVERYONE AT WORK THAT I AM GOING OUT TO EAT!" A compilation of things no one has ever said about a restaurant website. "Why would anyone want to skip this intro? I think I’ll watch it again," indeed.

Related: five ways to fix your restaurant's website.

  1. 1.  Please put your menu on a single page, rather than dividing it into 15 "categories" which must be clicked on separately.  (Maybe an exception can be made for having separate pages for cocktails and desserts, but not separating out every sub-type of food.)
    2.  Offer links to appropriate outside websites on your site, including, but not limited to, Yelp, OpenTable, and SeamlessWeb.

  2. The "five things" are dead on and good advice for a lot of websites, really.

My addendum to the PDF thing would be: "If you insist on posting a PDF please warn the user." I hate when I click on a link without realizing it's going to open a PDF.

I don't go to a lot of restaurant web pages, but it enrages me that no matter how many times I turn off "auto-play" on ESPN.com, it turns itself back on.  My computer should never make a sound that I do not tell it to make.

  4. Philly.com Sports articles automatically play video ads too. It's brutal.

ABC News, as well.  Very annoying.

And, you know, I hate ESPN's video, but at least they also give you a print story underneath it.  CNN's ridiculous video-only stories are tremendously irritating.  If I wanted to watch TV, I would turn on my TV.  When I'm on my computer, I want the option of taking 30 seconds to skim a story for pertinent information.  I'm not going to sit through a four-minute video (that follows a 30-second commercial) in most cases.
