I was outside here in Center City Philadelphia around noon and I have to say that I was unfazed by today's conditions. Not that I want to be more fazed; I don't. But I grew up in Tampa, so I know from heat AND humidity. And I'll save my complaining for when it is blast-furnace, knock-you-over-when-you-leave-your-air-conditioned-retreat-of-choice hot and I'm dripping with sweat immediately after I towel off from my morning shower. Or tomorrow, when I have to wear a suit.
I'm no fan of extreme heat like we're having in Chicago, but I love that the people who two weeks ago were complaining about the 50 degree temps non-stop rain are the same people complaining about the heat. I'd like a week or two of actual spring with 78 degrees and sunshine, too, but we live in Chicago, not San Diego.
Last year at XPN's "Wigginstock", we had Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Fields on the bill. It was most evil Sunday afternoon I can remember. 10,000 plus crammed into this little tiny park to see this one band.
AT 1 PM, I sent all of my volunteers to the beverage area to help them out. By 4 PM, the vendors were almost out of beer, water, juice, soda and ice. The station's "Members Only" area was passing out ice in cups by 6 PM because they just ran out of everything.
It's Becca. We're officially into June Gloom here in LA, and I hate it. I, too, feel like I've been thinking summer's around the corner for years. SUMMER IS COMING. LATER. I've been saying on twitter that I can't wait to start complaining about the heat the way I've been complaining about the cold.
I spent the morning and early afternoon at the zoo. As a volunteer with a cart. OUTSIDE. Well newbie volunteer made the mistake of going inside the lion house assuming inside = ac = cooler. But the lion house is literally 100 years old and not so much with the ac or the cooler. It was surprisingly survivable. And yet still unpleasant.
Jim, the difference is that in Tampa, it's 90+ degrees with 90+% humidity for months. A day or two of it here is eminently tolerable by comparison. Example: when I was in college and home for summers, I worked at a law firm in the mailroom. In those pre-email days, we were responsible, among other things, for delivering pleadings, etc., to other local firms. My bosses wanted us to look professional, so we were required to wear ties. To walk around. In Tampa. In July and August. I can tell you that it's hard to look like a professional anything when you're dripping wet after walking two blocks. Probably should have worn more knit ties, for the superior absorbency.
See, that's not moderate to this native Floridian. That's just cold. It's freezing indoors because of the AC, and freezing outdoors because it won't be summer. However, I totally understand that this is a first world problem.
Hottest temps in five years here in the Chicago area.
ReplyDeleteThought I might escape the DC heat by heading to Chicago...outdoor concert in Millennium Park tonight should be really fun.
ReplyDeleteHigh of 61 in San Francisco today. I feel like I've been waiting forever for summer.
ReplyDelete100,000 people coming for a Black Eyed Peas concert in Central Park tomorrow. 98 degrees, 180% humidity, chance of thunder storms. Awesome!
ReplyDeleteThe wrath of god visited upon people so evil as to voluntarily attend a Black Eyed Peas concert.
ReplyDeleteEvil or too-easily-entertained?

Not awesome...not at all.
99 in Montclair.
ReplyDeleteI miss spring, not that we had it this year.
What is this spring you speak of?
ReplyDeleteYeah...I'm with Adam C. - I kinda think it could be worse.
ReplyDeleteditto for seattle.

ReplyDeleteJune Gloom sucks, but I do enjoy the moderate temps in San Diego (66 today). Of course, we'll be under water when the ice caps finish melting...
ReplyDeleteOhmygod Adam it is so hot! You're kidding right? No really, how much hotter can you take it? I bet it wasn't this hot in Tampa today.
ReplyDeleteDidn't go to work today because of Shavuot. Spent the day at the pool. Well, in the pool. If it's gonna be this hot, I'm gonna be in the water.

ReplyDeleteAustin: 98 today - pretty much a cold wave after Monday's 102. I did not move here for the weather...
