GOTYE RAE JEPSEN: Yes, an enterprising soul has mashed up "Somebody That I Used To Know" and "Call Me Maybe." Has he created an abomination that must be destroyed or an all-powerful fusion of Songs of the Summer? Discuss.
I'm no fan of either song, but that mashup is pretty terrible. Strip whatever personality each original song had - in both vocals and instruments - and you're left with a lifeless mess that pretty much sums up everything I hate about current popular music.
For my money (and because I'm a gay man Of Almost A Certain Age), the song of the summer SHOULD be Madonna's "Turn Up The Radio", her best song since, at least, "Hung Up".

I recently learned that "Somebody That I Used to Know" wasn't a Sting song featuring some Croatian singer I was supposed to already know about.
ReplyDeleteNot actually Pomplamoose's best work. They have a great YouTube channel with clever covers, but this isn't one of them.
ReplyDeleteToo busy. I thought I was going to short circuit listening to that.
ReplyDeleteI liked it.
ReplyDeleteWasn't "Hung Up" basically an ABBA cover? NOT THAT THERE'S ANYTHING WRONG WITH THAT.
ReplyDeleteHee! Well, it had an ABBA sample in it, but like any good song that used a sample, it morphed it into something else.
ReplyDeleteAlso, as a bit of a nit, it's more a Song of This Past Winter.
ReplyDeleteMadonna's "Turn Up the Radio" is definitely the best Madonna song I've never heard of since "Hung Up."
ReplyDeleteThe best Call Me Maybe is still the Jimmy Fallon/Roots effort using children's instruments...
