IT'S COMPLETELY BAKED: Fantastic trivia question via
Edward Copeland: with the recent passing of Ernest Borgnine (
Marty,
1961 1955) and now Celeste Holm (
Gentleman's Agreement, 1947) today, who is now the longest-ago Oscar winner in each of the five major categories who's still living?
For Best Actress, it has to be Luise Rainer (The Good Earth, 1937). She's still chugging along at 100+.
ReplyDeleteFor director, I'm going to guess Mike Nichols (1968 for The Graduate).
ReplyDeleteFor Best Actor, the name that popped into my head was Sidney Poitier (early 60's). I asked my dad, he says Max Schell won it earlier. Too lazy to look it up.
ReplyDeleteAlso, Marty was not 1961, it was mid-50s.
ReplyDeleteCorrected. And Schell (Judgment at Nurenberg), Nichols, and Rainer are correct. Poitier is older than Schell, but won later.
ReplyDelete1967, no?
ReplyDeleteI cheated and looked up supporting actor/actress. You might (and probably eventually would) guess the actress, but you probably wouldn't get the actor without the list of winners in front of you.
ReplyDeleteYep, I was off by a year. 1967 release.
ReplyDeleteGeorge Chakiris is still alive, I'd bet he's the earliest Supp. Actor winner.
ReplyDeleteOlivia de Havilland would probably be runner up for Best Actress (1946 and 1949), since she turned 96 on July 1.
ReplyDeleteOlivia would still lose out to her younger sister, Joan Fontaine (Suspicion, 1941).
ReplyDeleteYep, Chakiris is correct.
ReplyDeleteIn retrospect, the answer for Best Supporting is kind of obvious.

ReplyDeleteShould've been, at least.
