PREMIERING AT THE PAVILLION? Apparently, I may be the last to know that Steve Carell is currently filming his first (presumably) straight-out dramatic role, starring as John E. du Pont Jr. in Foxcatcher, with Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo as the wrestling Schultz brothers. Bennett Miller (Capote, Moneyball) is directing.

In the interests of disclosure: I very very briefly and tangentially was part of Mr. du Pont's legal team in the civil litigation regarding the events to be depicted.

It has been a while since I saw it, but my recollection is that his performance in Crazy, Stupid, Love didn't have a comedic aspect.
ReplyDeleteI think being a suicidal, heartbroken homosexual Proust scholar in Little Miss Sunshine qualifies as dramatic. Also, why is Mark Ruffalo so inexplicably watchable/enjoyable, even in douchey roles?
ReplyDeleteThere was some humor in the dating scenes, and his interactions (in the first half) with Ryan Gosling's character. But as with a lot of his comedic roles, it was tempered by humanity and real emotion. I feel the same about his character in "Dan in Real Life" - ostensibly a comedic role, but really it's tinged throughout with sadness and reality.
